Information Technology Training Initiative
Sponsored by the Michigan Virtual University and Michigan Technological University

Are you … struggling with the software on your computer? in a bind because you don’t have the time or resources to take a computer class off-campus? wanting to improve your computer skills to help you with your work? The Information Technology Training Initiative, sponsored by the State of Michigan, is made up of hundreds of mini-courses and is available to all Michigan faculty, staff, and students in K-12 districts and higher education. Best of all, the courses are all FREE. Courses are available in Microsoft® Office products, programming languages, operating systems, web development, and even certification paths.

How to register:

First, go to http://mvulearning.mivu.org. From the menu on the left, select “Profile” and then select “create”. Then provide the following information:

1) First and Last Name

2) Valid e-mail Address

3) Create and verify your own password.

4) Identify yourself -- From the drop-down boxes in the second section, you will need to:

  • Identify whether you are in a K-12 or college/university system.
  • Identify your role within the education system.
  • Identify the college or university to which you belong.

5) Click the “Finish Now” button to continue to the Welcome Page.
From the Welcome Page you can either browse the catalog by category or search for a particular course. Once you find the course that interests you, click on the title to learn more about the course, then simply click on the “Take It Free!” link to add it to your Learning Plan.

To launch the course, simply click on the “Start” link under the “My Courses “ heading. When you’re done, exit the course. Your progress will be recorded. When you return, the program will remember where you left off and take it from there. To review your progress after you have exited the course, click on the “Info “ link and scroll past the course information to the bottom of the page. This area will reflect your recent activity and assessment scores and will be updated each time you work within the course.

Michigan Virtual University is just the ticket:

  • If you’re a staff member or a student – use a course as a tutorial or take several in a series to pick up an entirely new set of skills.
  • If you’re a faculty member – brush up on your own skills or build your own lessons plans around a single lesson or entire module.
  • If you’re already a computer whiz – follow one of the paths to certification.

Since there is no formal tracking mechanism for courses, the Center for Professional Development and Quality Improvement is interested in your feedback. If you take a course (or even just part of a course), please e-mail Becky Christianson at rwchrist@mtu.edu to complete a short survey. Or, complete the survey online. All individual information will remain confidential. Summarized results will be used for improving future educational offerings.

If you have any questions, please contact Becky Christianson at rwchrist@mtu.edu or 487-2416.
