Engineering Ranking Is Up
Tech’s undergraduate engineering ranking also rose, from 70th nationwide to 63rd.
“This underscores the value of the undergraduate education we provide at Michigan Tech,” said President Glenn Mroz. “The upward trajectory is good news too.”
According to the US News web site, the ranking system rests on two pillars. The formula uses quantitative and qualitative measures that education experts have proposed as reliable indicators of academic quality, and it is based on what US News calls “our researched view of what matters in education.” First, schools are categorized by their mission. Then US News gathers data from each institution on up to 15 indicators of academic excellence, including retention, graduation rate, faculty resources, financial resources, student selectivity and alumni giving rate. Each factor is assigned a weight that reflects US News research about how much a measure matters. Finally, the colleges and universities in each category are ranked against their peers based on their composite weighted scores.
US News also surveys university deans, provosts and presidents and uses their assessment of peer institutions to assign rankings.
Michigan Tech also made US News & World Report’s list of “A+ Schools for B Students. The rankings web site defines those as “schools where nonsuperstars have a decent shot at being accepted and thriving, where spirit and hard work could make all the difference to the admissions office.” To make this list, schools have to admit “a meaningful proportion of applicants whose test scores and class standing put them in non-A territory.”
US News has been ranking colleges and universities for 32 years.
