Title IX Policy Statement: Michigan Technological University does not discriminate in its employment practices or in its educational programs or activities on the basis of sex and gender. Michigan Tech also prohibits retaliation against any person opposing discrimination or participating in any discrimination investigation or complaint process internally or externally. Reports of misconduct, questions regarding Title IX, and concerns about noncompliance should be directed to the Title IX Coordinator. For a complete copy of the policy or more information, please contact the Title IX Coordinator or the Assistant Secretary of Education within the Office of Civil Rights (OCR).
Highlights
In April 2024, the new Title IX regulations were released. Michigan Tech has until August 1, 2024 to implement new policy to ensure compliance with the new rule. Per the Department of Education, they believe the final regulations protect against all sex-based harassment and disrimination, promote accountability and fairness, and empower and support students and families. The new rule expands training requirements and reporting expectations for all staff and faculty. University personnel should expect to fulfill their training requirements later this summer.
The new regulations have not explicitly addressed athletics. Our office will continue to monitor for any upcoming changes regarding athletics.
Title IX
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a Federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in educational programs and activities that receive Federal funds. It states:
"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
