My leadership journey at MTU began when I arrived for the first day of 2-a-day football practice August 1972. I was fortunate to have "instant" mentors like Duane Williams, Mike Scally, Tony Salani, Mike Foltz, Gene Timmer, and Bob Hunt who took the time to show this raw recruit how to become a Huskie...a winner on the field and in life! I wish every MTU alum could have spent at least a couple of plays in the huddle with these guys. I am certain that your lives would be enriched by even that short exposure to their dynamic leadership!
From 1972 to 1976 MTU provided me with many opportunities to develop my own personal leadership skills through my involvement in Army ROTC (hence the nickname "Sarge"), the Memorial Union Board where I had the opportunity to help develop the first MTU Arts Festival, and two terms as President of Kappa Delta Psi (the KD's)fraternity.
Perhaps the most valuable leadership exposure I got at MTU was the honor of being President of Blue Key and getting to work with that high powered group of student leaders to conduct the 1976 Winter Carnival. It was through this experience that I truly learned that "none of us is as smart as all of us!" I am still using lessons learned while running Winter Carnival in my leadership role today.
It is absolutely true that MTU offers much more than a great technical education!
