Kevin,
I enjoyed the reminiscing by Fred Uhlig about the car he had at Tech. Here’s a picture of my very first car, a 1954 Plymouth (along with my wife to be). It was purchased in 1963 for $100. I brought it right up for my final year at Tech, and housed it at my fraternity house on College Ave, then Beta Sigma Psi. While not a classic, it served me just fine for exploring the backcountry, fishing and hunting. Of course, now I wish I still had it. Houghton is not the greatest place to get your first winter driving experience, but I survived. The stamp sand did its job, even though it piled up in heaps at the bottom of every street in the spring, and had to be cleaned up and hauled away by the road crews. It’s also the first place I found where everyone parking their cars on the steep side streets did so with the front tires turned sharply toward and against the curb – just in case. I’m probably not the only one who took photos of a Houghton side street with the cameral slanted so that the car appeared to be on the level, and the houses appeared to be tilted.

Thanks, Ted: I still take my pictures that way. Though I think my neighbor’s house might actually be tilted… –Kevin
