Michigan Tech’s 2017 Summer Youth Programs Registration Now Open!

SYP for TA 12 6 16

As an alumni, you may have participated in Michigan Tech’s Summer Youth Programs (SYP) in the past or perhaps you remember seeing SYP students on campus while they worked on cool hands-on projects.

These programs have been around since 1972 and offer students a chance to perform chemical diagnostics, make movies, and launch hand-built rockets, all while experiencing Michigan Tech’s campus and the surrounding beauty of the Keweenaw Peninsula. SYP offers unique programs in the fields of science, engineering, technology, business, and humanities, where middle and high school students can get a one-of-a-kind, hands-on learning experience. SYP participants explore career options in some of the most in-demand industries today, while gaining skills that help them in their day-to-day lives.

SYP offers over 50 different explorations, like Engineering 101, Forensic Science and CSI, and Blacksmithing. Several new courses have been added to the 2017 roster, including: Computing Elements, Coding for the Internet of Things, Global Discovery 101, and The World of Design.

Students can also apply to a wide variety of competitive scholarship programs such as Women in Engineering, Engineering Scholars Program, National Summer Transportation Institute, and Women in Computer Science, where they will explore careers in the fields of science and engineering and interact with alumni and role models.

Summer Youth Programs offers students the opportunity to try hands-on projects that ignite their passion to continue their exploration into science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). This past summer was SYP’s largest in over a decade, hosting over 1,100 students from across the U.S. and worldwide from countries including Bahrain, South Korea, Nigeria, and Pakistan. As of fall 2016, the number of SYP alumni now attending Michigan Tech makes up 9.4 percent of the student population.

You can find the complete list of courses, request a catalog, or fill out an application on the Summer Youth Programs website, syp.mtu.edu. Please contact the Center for Pre-College Outreach with any questions about courses, camp life, or Summer Youth Programs in general. We can’t wait to see you and your family next summer!
