We’ll see if this gets through. Congratulations on your new position.
I tried the route through the article and it goes to Microsoft email.
Even though I am a Tech Engineer, I am no fan of social media, etc. however wanted to comment on what appears to be missing from many Winter Carnivals in recent years – at least nothing mentioned in the news releases. Of course back in the day there wasn’t much press for the speed skating during winter carnival. There was a small group that plied the ice, some on long blades, between the hockey and broom ball, etc. however we were a dedicated bunch. I was hoping that short track skating with the olympic buzz might take hold there as there was plenty of time in the late 60′s to practice at Dee. Of course if you wanted to take to the outdoor rinks there was plenty of ice time to be had – as long as one paid attention to the wind chill!
So just curious if there might still be some speed skating during winter carnival?

Heather Sander, in Alumni Relations, responded with the good news that speed skating is, indeed still going.
Heather,
Thank you for your response.
Great to hear from the UP! We have a day here today that reminds of the days at Tech. 50 mph winds with spots of 2-3 inches of snow per hour. It is something you miss once the experience of four winters at Tech is a memory. Or at least some of us miss. So we retired to Maine for a number of reasons and today it just happens to be blizzard conditions.
There are a number of new events for winter carnival compared to the 60′s. Always talk about getting back for a winter carnival, however timing is always against that plan. I will check out the results with interest.
Have had a chance to curl since moving to Maine. Our club just had a college bon spiel so if there is ever any college curling that might pose an interest to Tech, let me know. There were ten teams here for the weekend. It is a great winter sport. MIT took the final game to win. Imagine engineers would do well – at least have a lot of details that would challenge them.
There was 500, 1000 and one mile skating events in the 60′s. Is there a place to get through the ice for fishing this time of year? Maybe just a matter of a good auger?
Appreciate the information.
