Dennis, Great job on the Newsletter, thank you! I just wanted to weigh in on the article from 1/15/14, “We are Not One of the Coldest Colleges?”. I quickly read the article that it linked to and they mentioned that if your school wasn’t on the list that it was because of lack of student reviews and corresponding data. That makes perfect sense to me.
When I was at Tech I remember seeing the national news talking about other places like Buffalo, New York and how much snow they would get in a particular storm (or for the season) and how it was shutting the city down. Tech often had more snow and was colder than these other places during the same storm systems. We never made the national news for it, we just delayed school for an hour or two so the plow crews could get on top of it. We just expected cold and snow, dressed accordingly, and moved on with life. Heck, we even celebrated the snow (Winter Carnival, broomball, skiing, snowmobiling, sledding down streets that are closed off for winter, etc.).
Right now I live in Rockford, Illinois (right between Beloit College (#20) and Northern Illinois University (#21)) and I laugh when folks around here complain about “winter weather. I’ve been here since 1995. Sure, it’s snowed a few times, and it can get cold for several days at a stretch, but I’m still waiting for a real winter. So I take pride in the fact that Tech didn’t make the list (or national news). The folks on the list should just put on the right gear, break out the snow blowers and snow scoops and quit whining. It’s winter, it’s the Midwest, deal with it.
Laughing all the way,

Paul: We took honors as the snowiest, as revealed by Accuweather, after our alums, students, and friends straightened them out:

Dennis,
You are wondering why Michigan Tech did not make the 20 coldest campuses. Today (Jan. 16) in Adelaide, Australia on the campus of the Univ. of Adelaide it hit 47c. This is an all time record for high temperature.
Please send a few carloads of Copper County snow.

John: Oh, we’d love to! No worries for Carnival this year!

Too bad College Prowler does not rank by snowfall. I’m sure our three U.P. four year schools as well as Gogebic Community College would be contenders. In my years of living in Houghton, Sault Ste. Marie, Marquette, and Ironwood I have seen if not shoveled snow to where the banks reached above the eaves of the garage. Every exit from a driveway or side street involves inching out so that if a car is coming it may have time to stop before you can see it.
This is also an interesting story. My daughter did her graduate work at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, not ranked but surrounded by schools which were. My son-in-law earned his doctorate at the University of Florida. One summer when he was visiting Minnesota, he said he was never coming back in the summer because it was too hot up here.

Greg: Sometimes that big city heat can be oppressive. I’ll stay here.
