Career Fair

Off to build a career

I found myself being one of those mentors.

I got to see some of the students I met in the fall….some getting ready to graduate.

I got to do some interviews with those that impressed me.

Our company has extended some offers.

Hope some of those prospects will decide to start a career with us.

I found myself directing others to other companies, where what they wanted to do was not exactly a match with us.

The career fair has grown.  It was not around when I was there.

Thanks,
Michael D. Peterson, P.E. ‘85

I’m glad you got to be here, and thanks for the work you’ve done with our students.

Your career fair story and comment from a mid career perspective made me think of a short interaction I had with an engineering student. I met with an engineering intern a while ago. We met for lunch and he asked “what can an engineer do?” My response was your looking and the question backwards. The real question is what can an engineer NOT do? I listed about every department and position in my company and said an engineer  can do that. Granted, some positions may need a little bit more schooling (such as learning finance rules). But how many of these jobs can be done if you don’t have a engineering degree? A lot less. I’m not saying every engineer is able to fit every position, that depends on personal traits and business requirements, but an engineering degree opens more possibilities than other degrees.

Also my daughter (Tech Alum 2013) was staffing the Kimberly Clark booth at the career fair.

It’s the ability to solve problems—regardless of context—that impresses me the most about my engineer friends. As a writer, I instead tend to cause problems.
Had the opportunity to visit school last week and bring our son Sam for a tour. I graduated from Tech in 87′ and my wife, Megan Cronin graduated in 89′. Besides visiting all of our favorite places on and off campus, we were treated to a very thorough tour of campus and had a great meeting with staff from school of Business and Economics. Everyone told the prospective students about the career fair that just finished and you could still feel the excitement of the event days later. Tech really looks out for their students best interests and provides awesome opportunities.

Thanks for a great visit,

Career Fair means a lot to our students, too. Career Services has done an amazing job building that event the last few years.
