North or South American

board of trade

dennis,
i’m pretty sure you can’t tell if the picture isĀ of the south american or the north american without seeing the actual name on the ship. if the question was something else, the answer is that yes there were two ships. one the south american and the other the north american. they were pretty much identical as i remember them docked in detroit behind the bob-lo boats. they were cruise ships that cruised the great lakes. they probably had different itinerarys but at least one of them, if not both regularly docked in houghton to pick up produce from cohodas.

Dennis; When I arrived in Houghton in September 1948 Coach Bessone found me a room to rent in the Dee Flats which were above the Board of Trade. I lived there my first year. The bartenders were Alex Colombe (brother of the owner), Mort Brown and Johnny Regan. They held Shuffleboard Tournaments and I spent many hours playing cribbage at the bar. It was a popular spot especially after the hockey games.
