Michigan Tech Researchers Find Fresh Ways to Connect in the Nation’s Capital

Michigan Tech research faculty and staff traveled to Washington, D.C., resuming the annual trip for the first time since the pandemic.

Learn more about the opportunities experienced by the 32 participating faculty representing colleges and units across campus as they upped their knowledge of funding agencies and the funding process — and got to know some of their own Michigan Tech colleagues better.

PhD Defense: Meida Wang, Math

Ph.D. candidate Meida Wang will defend her doctoral dissertation on Friday (July 14) at 1 p.m. in person in Fisher 133 and virtually via Zoom.

The title of Wang's dissertation is "Statistical Methods for GWAS and the Impact of Diabetic Medication Adherence on Healthcare Costs."

Wang is advised by Qiuying Sha.

MS Defense: Zenia Sidorov, CS

M.S. in Computer Science candidate Ženia Sidorov will present a master's thesis defense on Monday (July 17) from 10-11:30 a.m. in person in Rekhi 101 and virtually. Virtual attendees are invited to join via Zoom.

The title of Sidorov's thesis defense is "Prediction of Sumoylation Sites in Proteins from Language Model Representations."

Travis Isbell Named Director of Esports

Travis Isbell has been named the director of Esports at Michigan Tech, Vice President for Athletics and Recreation Suzanne Sanregret has announced. Isbell is a former professional gamer who comes to Houghton from the University of North Dakota. He is the second director in program history and began his duties on June 26.

"I am very pleased to welcome Travis to Michigan Tech," Sanregret said. "His depth of experience across a wide variety of games makes him the right choice as the director of our young program. I believe his enthusiasm for helping student-athletes grow in and out of the arena will make him a great fit for our program."

"I am honored and thrilled to join Michigan Tech and to serve our student-athletes as the next Esports director/head coach," Isbell said. "Michigan Tech is an outstanding and dynamic university that will play a vital role in developing esports not only in Michigan but across the region and the country. I look forward to working alongside the MTU community to provide exceptional esports opportunities for our student-athletes and to advance the mission of the department and institution."

Tennis Receives ITA Academic Recognition

Both Michigan Tech tennis programs have been recognized as 2023 ITA All-Academic Teams by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

The Huskies also had 13 players earn ITA Scholar-Athlete honors:

  • Women's tennis: Dominika Bobik, Emily Cojocaru, Marina Fernandez, Chiara Heinz, Neva Manas, Lauren Opalewski and Ewa Podulka.

  • Men's tennis: Adam Fenjiro, Vitor Jordao, Ricardo Nunez, Eli Pinnoo, Ambarish Rao and Leon Sell.

To earn ITA All-Academic Team recognition, institutions must maintain a 3.20 GPA (on a 4.00 scale). Individuals must hold a GPA minimum of 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year and be listed on the institutional eligibility form.

New Funding

Tatyana Karabencheva-Christova (Chem) is the principal investigator on a project that received a $427,001 research and development grant from the National Institutes of Health.

The project is titled "Insights into Structure-Function Relationships of Matrix Metalloproteinase-1 from Computational and Experimental Studies."

In the News

Jeffrey Allen (ME-EM) was mentioned in a NASA Science News press release announcing six physical science proposals selected for funding by NASA’s Physical Sciences Research Program. Allen is the principal investigator of one of the projects, which will build on prior reduced-gravity research to advance fundamental research in the physical sciences.
