New Edition of I-9 Form Available

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has issued a new edition of the Form I-9. The new I-9 becomes mandatory Nov. 1, 2023.

The new form does not contain any substantive changes from the Oct. 21, 2019 version. However, there are changes to how the form is organized. A summary of changes to the form and instructions are available on the USCIS website.

Highlights of the changes include:

  • Sections 1 and 2 are reduced to a single sheet. No previous fields were removed. Multiple fields were merged into fewer fields when possible, such as in the employer certification.
  • Section 3, used for reverification of current employees and, in some instances, rehiring of former employees, is moved to a supplemental section at the end of the form.
  • COVID-19 temporary flexibilities for Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, end on July 31, 2023.
    • Because Michigan Tech is enrolled in E-Verify only for governmental grant programs, all departments must comply with the DHS requirement to physically examine the employee’s I-9 documents in the employee’s physical presence.

Below are the USCIS Guides on filling out the sections:

USCIS offers free employer training to explain and demonstrate how to complete Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification.

We are working on updating the HR I-9 resource page with the most up-to-date information. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us at humanresources@mtu.edu or 906-487-2280.
