NSF Proposal Submission Updates

Researchers who are submitting proposals to the National Science Foundation (NSF) should be aware of several upcoming changes and clarifications that may impact proposal submission.

Below, we highlight significant upcoming changes that will affect NSF proposers. However, the full list of changes — which will go into effect May 20 — can be found on the NSF Proposal & Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG) and the associated Significant Changes and Clarifications webpage. Current submission rules remain in effect through May 19.

The three-page limitation for each biographical sketch has been removed; there is now no page limitation for this section of the proposal. In addition, the synergistic activities section has been removed from the biographical sketch. Information on synergistic activities must now be submitted for each senior/key person as a separate one-page document uploaded to Research.gov.

The "Proposal Font, Spacing and Margin Requirements" section of the PAPPG has been modified to allow for submission of proposal documents in landscape format.

Requirements for mentoring plans have been expanded to now require a mentoring plan for all postdoctoral researchers and graduate students supported on the project. The page limitation for the mentoring plan remains one page. This is the first time a mentoring plan has been required for graduate students. In addition, at the award stage, Individual Development Plans are required for postdoctoral scholars or graduate students who receive substantial NSF support on the project. Each Individual Development Plan is required to be updated annually.

NSF will present information about these changes in a webinar next Tuesday (March 12) at 2 p.m. EDT. Visit the NSF Policy Office Outreach website for more information or to register for the webinar.

Join the Voter Engagement Coalition!

Historically, young adults have voted at lower rates than older cohorts. The newest members of our democracy move more frequently, are less likely to have a driver’s license and are less likely to be contacted directly by political campaigns than older age groups, all of which are barriers to registering and voting. Help us change these historical trends!

Members of our campus community are invited to join the Voter Engagement Coalition. Over the course of the 2024 election cycle, this nonpartisan working group will create, implement and assess a plan to foster civic engagement and voter participation on Michigan Tech’s campus. By harnessing the collective expertise, passion and influence of our community, we hope to foster a culture of democracy that extends far beyond Election Day.

The coalition will host an introductory meeting at 1 p.m. this Thursday (March 7) in the Memorial Union Building Superior Room for anyone interested in learning more about this important endeavor. Not able to attend Thursday afternoon? Email Danielle Meirow at dlmeirow@mtu.edu to share your interest and learn more.

ADVANCE Roundup: Celebrate Women's History Month

Women's History Month puts a spotlight on women's accomplishments, including the advances made by women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM). Among these women are the few awarded a Nobel Prize for their contributions. A recent video, "Good Chemistry," documents the work of two women scientists, Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna, who won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their discoveries about CRISPR-Cas9. It was the first time two women were jointly awarded a Nobel. This engaging short film explains their work and allows us to meet these women and recognize their passion and diligence.

Claudia Goldin, the 2023 winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, is one of Time Magazine's Women of the Year for 2024 in recognition of her foundational work on women and work. Both her topic and her contributions deserve celebration. She focused on the then-marginalized area of women in the labor market, and her findings, including family and career patterns and gendered wage gaps, have had considerable impact on workplace policies and practices.

The Nobel Prize has been awarded to a woman just 64 times since 1901. Yet some women researchers were ignored or overlooked despite their significant contributions to Nobel-winning work. The case of Rosalind Franklin, the biophysicist whose data was critical to the DNA work that won the Nobel Prize for Francis Crick, James Watson and Maurice Wilkins, has become well-known. But others deserve recognition and honor, and Women's History Month is a time to celebrate them.

The centrality of women in STEMM is attested to in both the recognized accomplishments and the overlooked contributions of women in science. Systemic efforts to create cultures of inclusion and equity — like Michigan Tech ADVANCE's Advocates and Allies — are important in overcoming past assumptions and biases that kept women's role in STEMM invisible for too long.

Today’s feature was shared with us by Patty Sotirin of the ADVANCE PI Team. If you have an article you think we should feature, please email it to advance-mtu@mtu.edu and we will consider adding it to the ADVANCE Roundup.

The ADVANCE Roundup is brought to you by ADVANCE at Michigan Tech, an NSF-funded initiative dedicated to improving faculty career success, retention, diversity, equity and inclusion. Past articles are available on the ADVANCE Newsblog.

Women's Basketball Goes 1-1 to Close Regular Season

The Michigan Tech women's basketball team won a third straight game against Davenport to begin the final weekend of the regular season, but fell to Grand Valley State to conclude it.

The Huskies led wire-to-wire to handle the Panthers 91-64 at the SDC Gymnasium on Thursday (Feb. 29).

"We needed to come out with urgency, and we did that. I think we played so well because we came out sharp defensively. To have that type of start was good for us, and for Alex (Rondorf) to hit her first shot to get 1,000 points — none of that hurts," head coach Sam Clayton said. "I am so thrilled for Tessa (Leece). She's been playing unreal — her points stand out to everyone, but she's doing everything right. She also had four assists and no turnovers and has come on so strong, even in the last couple of weeks — and that's what a senior does."

MTU fell to No. 2 Grand Valley State 56-47 on Senior Day at the SDC Gymnasium on Saturday (March 2).

"I thought we competed really hard. We didn't shoot it great and I think if we (had) hit a few more shots, it's a different game," Clayton said. "In general, after the first quarter, offensively I felt like we got better looks — but credit Grand Valley State, they're a really good defensive team and they make it tough. We just gave up the ball too much in the first half. I thought we learned from it and took better care of the ball in the second half. I loved how we fought in the fourth quarter — they wanted it badly, and we showed we can compete with one of the best teams in the nation."

Tech's win over Davenport secured the GLIAC's fourth seed and clinched a home game to open the GLIAC Tournament. The Huskies will face fifth-seeded Parkside tomorrow (March 6) at 6 p.m. at the SDC.

Men's Basketball Routs Panthers, Can't Catch Lakers

The Michigan Tech men's basketball team routed Davenport and lost a high-scoring affair to Grand Valley to close out the regular season.

The Huskies used a season-high 24 assists to kindle the offense and overwhelm Davenport's defense, completing the series sweep over the Panthers 88-61 at the SDC Gymnasium on Thursday (Feb. 29).

"The stat that stands out is the 24 assists — and obviously, we hit some shots, but I did feel like the ball was moving," head coach Josh Buettner said. "Defensively, I thought we did a nice job of limiting them in the half court. We had some balance in the first half, which made us hard to guard with Marcus (Tomashek) and Dan (Gherezgher) doing what they do and Pete (Calcaterra) coming off the bench and giving us a spark. Dawson (Nordgaard) is drawing a lot of attention inside, and it opens up the perimeter for us."

The Huskies fell in their Senior Day regular-season finale to Grand Valley State 92-86 at the SDC Gymnasium on Saturday (March 2).

"Today, we couldn't get a stop in crunch time. In the last minute of the game, there were a couple of times I would've liked to get a timeout, in hindsight," Buettner said. "There's a lot to learn from. I thought we fought, and Grand Valley played well while I thought we played OK. They went inside to (Marius) Grazulis and we didn't have an answer for him. He stepped up and hurt us, and the four (William) Dunn 3s were big."

The Huskies earned the fifth seed in the GLIAC Tournament and will head downstate for a rematch against fourth-seeded Grand Valley State tomorrow (March 6) at 8 p.m.

Hockey Splits with Tommies, Earns No. 3 Seed in CCHA Playoffs

Michigan Tech hockey split their final CCHA series of the regular season at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

The Huskies fell 2-0 to St. Thomas on Friday (March 1).

"I didn't feel a lot of life in the building and on the bench. There's a lot of distractions right now and we didn't practice very well this week," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "Both goaltenders played well and they made one shot. They defended well, and we didn't make the goalie move much. We were challenged offensively."

Tech shut out the Tommies 6-0 on Saturday (March 2) in their regular-season finale and clinched the No. 3 seed in the CCHA Mason Cup Playoffs. The Huskies will host Bowling Green this weekend (March 8-9) in a best-of-three series.

"All the seniors pointed, and Blake gets a shutout on Senior Night," Shawhan said. "I've never coached a group where there's such a place in my heart for every single one of them. This group has always represented the program and their families in a positive way."

RSVP for ADVANCE Deep Dive Workshop

Have you noticed that different people have vastly different experiences in classes, meetings, informal and formal events and other interactions on campus? Ever noticed that this is dependent upon visually identifiable characteristics (gender, skin color, etc.)? Would you like to learn more about becoming an ally in the moment and help intentionally craft the culture at Michigan Tech to position every single individual for success (not just those who fit the "historically typical" mold)?

The ADVANCE Initiative at Michigan Tech is proud to present a deep dive workshop with the goal: “Stand together in the quest for gender and racial equity.” The workshop will be held March 15 and is for returning attendees who want to investigate strategies for creating an inclusive climate. You are invited to attend one of two sessions, held concurrently, to explore the impact of gender and race on faculty members’ experiences of the University campus climate.

Through a review of the existing research and group discussions, these sessions will seek to shift the dialogue, from individual challenges experienced by underrepresented faculty to seeking to acknowledge and identify institutional challenges and solutions related to gender and racial inequity in higher education.

If you'd simply like to learn more about these issues in a collegial environment, please attend. If you would like to practice allyship, attend and bring a friend!

This workshop will be led by Michigan Tech's own Advocate Team members (cisgender-men-only session) and Advocates and Allies Advisory Board members (women and other genders session).

Lunch will be served at this workshop. All participants need to RSVP in advance.

Workshop Details:

  • What: ADVANCE Advocates and Allies Deep Dive Workshop
  • When: Friday, March 15, from 12-1:30 p.m.
  • Where: MUB Ballroom B
  • Who: This workshop is intended for faculty and staff who want to acquire in-depth understanding in creating an inclusive climate.

This workshop is being sponsored by the Advocates Team, the Advocates and Allies Advisory Board (A3B) and the ADVANCE Initiative at Michigan Tech.
