"The Engine Inside" (2023) is the final film of the 2024 Sustainability Film & Discussion Series, coordinated by the Michigan Tech Office of Sustainability and Resilience. The film will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday (May 16) in Fisher 138 on Michigan Tech's campus. Film length is 81 minutes.

The film is free and everyone is welcome to attend. A suggested $5 donation is appreciated. The film will be followed by discussion and refreshments provided by the Office of Sustainability and Resilience.

"The Engine Inside" follows the lives of six individuals from around the globe who have devoted themselves to a simple, age-old machine — the bicycle. Witness how bicycles have the potential to transform lives and contribute to a better world!

If possible, participants are encouraged to ride their bikes to the film, since it's now light outside till 9 p.m. or later.

Bryant Weathers (ADV) will facilitate the discussion after the film. He’s a born and raised Yooper, silent sports enthusiast (biker, hiker, runner, Nordic skier) and Michigan Tech’s director for charitable gift planning.

Film sponsors include the Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Keweenaw Land Trust, Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative, Keweenaw Co-Op, Friends of the Land of Keweenaw and WUP MiSTEM, as well as Michigan Tech’s Great Lakes Research Center, Department of Social Sciences, Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering, Center for Science and Environmental Outreach, College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science, Sustainability Demonstration House, Students for Sustainability and Keweenaw Youth for Climate Action.

Ph.D. in Computer Science candidate Daniel Byrne will present his final oral examination (defense) on Tuesday (May 14) at 9 a.m. in Rekhi 214 and via Zoom online meeting.

The title of Byrne’s defense is “Model Guided Optimization for Key-Value Caches.”

Byrne is advised by Department of Computer Science faculty members Zhenlin Wang and Nilfer Onder.

John Vucetich and Sarah Hoy (CFRES) were quoted by WLUC TV6 in a story about Michigan Tech’s annual Isle Royale Winter Study — the longest-running predator-prey study in the world. The annual report for the 65th winter study was announced by Michigan Tech News on April 30.

The Chronicle of Higher Education noted the appointment of LaReesa Wolfenbarger as dean of Michigan Tech’s College of Sciences and Arts. Wolfenbarger will start as dean July 1.

The Daily Mining Gazette mentioned Michigan Tech in a story about the status of the long-term, multiphase management plan to protect Buffalo Reef from encroaching stamp sands. According to the story, MTU researchers are also looking at stamp sands along the western shoreline of the Keweenaw Peninsula near Freda.

Rural Innovation eXchange mentioned Michigan Tech and the Keweenaw Time Traveler in a story about the winners of Michigan’s Governor’s Awards for Historic Preservation. MTU received an award in recognition of the efforts of the Department of Social Sciences, Geospatial Research Facility and Michigan Tech Archives toward developing the Keweenaw Time Traveler. The award was the subject of a Michigan Tech News story.

Memorial Day HR/Payroll Deadline Schedule

Due to the Memorial Day holiday on May 27, deadlines for payroll forms will be as follows for the period from May 12 through May 25 (bi-weekly 11). Department timekeepers are responsible for sharing this information with all employees in their department.

The deadlines below indicate when items are due to Payroll and/or Human Resources (HR), not to individual departments. Departments are responsible for setting internal deadlines with their employees to meet the Payroll/Human Resources deadlines.

GSG Summer Softball League 2024: Registration Open!

Summer is on its way and so is Graduate Student Government’s (GSG’s) summer softball league! This no-holds-barred extreme slow-pitch softball league will be held over the summer semester between June and August! Registration is now open on the GSG Softball website.

Don’t have any softball equipment, you say? Well, no worries here! GSG will provide bats, balls and gloves for every registered player. Of course, if you do have your own equipment, you are more than welcome to use it.

Also, feel free to start recruiting for your team. Those who are not affiliated with a team but are interested in playing are welcome to register solo. We will find a team for you. If you don’t have enough players for a team, still register! We will help you to fill your team with available solo players.

Teams and solo players can register until May 23. Games will be played on Thursdays, starting on June 6.
