A new fixture has created a tradition at Michigan Technological University. The Alumni Gateway Arch on the west end of campus was dedicated with an April 26 ribbon-cutting ceremony during commencement weekend. Afterward, students gathered for photos under the gateway in their commencement regalia.

Donations made the Alumni Gateway Arch possible. The lead donor was Mike Trewhella ’78. “It was beautiful to see students lined up with their friends and family to take photos,” he said. “That really validated the meaning of this project.”

Michigan Tech track and field middle distance runners Sam Lange (1,500 meters) and John Paul Norland (800m) ran personal bests at the Lee Last Chance Meet in Cleveland, Tennessee, on Saturday (May 11) to conclude the three-meet week for the Huskies.

Norland finished in 1:51.06, good for 14th overall in the race and just under the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. He caps an impressive outdoor campaign with the 52nd-fastest 800m time in Division II.

Lange took fourth place with a new personal-best time of 3:45.01 — currently DII's 22nd-best time and over a second faster than his previous record. It's also the second-fastest time in MTU history behind Clayton Sayen's school record time of 3:43.84.

"I was really proud of the way Sam and John Paul competed down here in Tennessee," head coach Robert Young said. "Both found themselves in really strong fields and took advantage of the opportunity. John Paul showed that his breakthrough from last week was no fluke by notching his first-ever provo mark. That event is very deep, so he won't make the national meet this year, but look out for him next spring!"

"Sam's mark puts him right on the bubble for being accepted to the national meet," Young continued. "He absolutely left everything he had on the track today to get there and now we just have to patiently wait until Tuesday to find out if he's in or not."

The Daily Mining Gazette mentioned Michigan Tech in a story about the Copper Shores Community Health Foundation’s 10th anniversary celebration, held Saturday (May 11) at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. The story highlighted CSCHF’s partnership with MTU in supporting health occupations research and investment, as well as the foundation's support of the University’s nursing bachelor’s degree.

Fall 2024 CSCHF Graduate Assistantship Nominations Open

Pre-proposals for Fall 2024 Copper Shores Community Health Foundation (CSCHF) Graduate Assistantships are being accepted and are due no later than 4 p.m. next Tuesday (May 21) to the Graduate School. Students who best meet the foundation’s criteria will be invited to submit a full application, which will be due on June 25. Instructions on the pre-proposal and information about the full application and evaluation process are found online.

Students are eligible if all of the following criteria are met:

1. Must be a Ph.D. student conducting a research or outreach project that will promote and/or improve the overall health of Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga and Ontonagon communities.
2. Must be two years after starting the graduate program at the time of application.
3. Must not be a prior recipient of a Portage Health Foundation (PHF) or CSCHF Graduate Assistantship.
4. Preference will be given to applicants with long-standing local connections to Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga or Ontonagon county.

Priority will be given to students originally from Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga or Ontonagon counties. Nonresident students and international students are encouraged to apply if their health research is applicable to health needs and job shortages of our local community (obesity research, rural health, medical informatics, drug delivery and lab testing, physical therapy, etc.).

These assistantships are available through the generosity of the Copper Shores Community Health Foundation. They are intended to recognize outstanding Ph.D. talent in health-oriented research areas. Applicants should be a catalyst for promoting and improving the overall health of Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga and Ontonagon communities through one of the following:

• health research and technology development
• health education or preventive and wellness initiatives
• rural health care access, informatics and assessment of care

Students who receive full support through a CSCHF Graduate Assistantship may not accept any other employment. For example, students cannot be fully supported by a CSCHF Graduate Assistantship and accept support as a GTA or GRA.

Ph.D. in Computer Science candidate Daniel Byrne will present his final oral examination (defense) today (May 14) at 9 a.m. in Rekhi 214 and via Zoom online meeting.

The title of Byrne’s defense is “Model Guided Optimization for Key-Value Caches.”
