Candidate Presentation
The first candidate, Kier Birondo, will give a public presentation at 2 p.m. today, Aug. 14, in the Rozsa's north mezzanine.

Qualtrics Available for University Use

Michigan Tech has renewed a three-year license for Qualtrics. This is an online survey tool that allows you to build and distribute surveys, collect responses and analyze response data. MTU faculty and staff can use Qualtrics for conducting academic research, gathering student feedback and campuswide surveys.

We encourage you to take advantage of Qualtrics to help enhance your projects and initiatives. To get started with Qualtrics, we can help. Contact IT at it-help@mtu.edu or call 906-487-1111.

Linux Computer Labs RHEL 9 Updates and Changes

From now until Aug. 25, Michigan Tech will be upgrading computers to RHEL 9 in Rekhi 112, Rekhi 113 and Rekhi 118, including colossus.it.mtu.edu. During the transition process, systems will be unavailable for use.

The Linux computers in Dow 211, Dow 853, MEEM 707, Rekhi 117, the Library Orange Zone, and Guardian.it.mtu.edu have all been upgraded to RHEL 9. Please use these systems to test that your course material will work as expected. In addition, verify that your class/coursework is in the Linux Lab Software List for RHEL 9 with valid contact information and course details.

Beginning this fall, RHEL 9 lab computers will be configured to automatically log out after four continuous hours of inactivity. Both graphical and Secure Shell (SSH) sessions will be logged out if there is no input for four hours. To avoid losing any unsaved work, please save all work before leaving the system idle. If you are actively using the machine during the four-hour period, you will not be logged out.

Refer to the Michigan Tech IT News blog post about RHEL 9 upgrades for more information. For additional questions or to offer feedback on the RHEL 9 campus lab system, we can help. Contact IT at it-help@mtu.edu or call 906-487-1111.

Holly Hassel Receives Best Book Award from Council of Writing Program Administrators

Holly Hassel (HU), professor and director of composition at Michigan Tech, and her co-author Cassandra Phillips of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee at Waukesha have received the Council of Writing Program Administrators Best Book Award for their book "Materiality and Writing Studies: Aligning Labor, Scholarship and Teaching."

"Materiality and Writing Studies" presents both data-driven explanation and anecdotal evidence regarding the visibility of scholarship on writing curriculum/programs in the field. Central to the book's analysis is an autoethnography conducted by two of the authors about their experiences teaching in the University of Wisconsin system.

The council's Best Book Award Committee praised the book for providing a real look at writing programs, many of which operate without a writing program administrator (WPA).

"Recognizing the unique expertise offered by two-year college writing instructors, who often work without a formal WPA, 'Materiality and Writing Studies' focuses on the ways that contingency and material realities shape pedagogies and classrooms. The committee appreciated the inclusion of instructor voices narrating the effects of institutional changes and material stressors on their work and the work of their students," said the committee.

"This book tells a compelling, persuasive story about the necessity of investing the field's energy into first year writing students, teachers, programs, curricula."

"Materiality and Writing Studies" was published by the National Council of Teachers of English in 2022.

Parking During Move-In: Friday and Saturday

It’s an exciting time as we finalize our preparations for students to return to campus. Over two days — Friday and Saturday, Aug. 16 and 17 — we will welcome our first-year students as they move into their residence halls, meet new roommates, say goodbye to parents, and get their first taste of college life.

Michigan Tech’s Move-In Weekend will take place on Friday from 12-6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The two-day Move-In event has allowed us to reduce congestion and provide a more relaxed atmosphere for our new Huskies.

If your regular parking lot is closed on Friday, please plan to park in an alternative location (see below). This would be a huge help to the students and would also ensure you are able to leave campus more easily at the end of the day.

Parking Lots Closed for Friday:

  • Lot 27 — Admin Visitor Lot
  • Lot 11 — Black Permit Lot next to Admin
  • Lot 8 — Behind Walker
  • Lot 14 — Bus Stop

Recommended Alternative Lots for Friday:

  • Lot 33 — Meese (To avoid traffic, this lot is strongly recommended.)
  • Lot 2 — Behind Academic Office Building
  • Lot 10 — Commuter Lot east of the Rozsa
  • Lot 12 — Between Highway 41 and the MUB
  • Lot 1 — The west side of the lot is available, but will be a high-traffic area for Move-In.

Open Parking Lots for Saturday:

  • Lot 10 — Commuter Lot east of the Rozsa
  • Lot 33 — Meese
  • All other parking lots will be closed on Saturday.

Cliff Drive Traffic Changes:

  • One-way operation heading eastbound
  • No parking on Cliff Drive tomorrow and Friday, Aug. 15 and 16

Thank You for Your Support
The Waino Wahtera Center for Student Success and Residential Living appreciate your support as we make these changes to improve the process of welcoming new students to campus, ensuring a great start to their Husky experience.
