Center for Artificial Intelligence Launched at Michigan Tech

As Michigan Tech faculty and staff return to campus for the 2024-25 academic year, the Institute of Computing and Cybersystems (ICC) is proud to share some exciting news from over the summer. In May, the University launched a new Center for Artificial Intelligence.

Hosted within the ICC and led by Vinh Nguyen (MAE/MMET), the Center for Artificial Intelligence is the evolution of the ICC Data Science Center, with a renewed focus on pioneering AI research across various domains.

By leveraging Michigan Tech’s existing strength in engineering and computing, the center aims to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Innovative Research — Conducting cutting-edge research to challenge the boundaries of possibility by developing new AI algorithms, models and technologies to benefit not only Michigan Tech, but communities across the country.
  2. Interdisciplinary Collaboration — Fostering a multidisciplinary center in which AI experts from diverse disciplines across MTU’s campus can build highly collaborative research proposals and deliver groundbreaking research outcomes in AI.
  3. External Partnerships — Building strong and successful partnerships with local, regional and national entities to transform AI innovations into real-world applications.
  4. AI Education — Educating and training the next generation of AI experts, and supporting opportunities for a strong AI education in Michigan and beyond.

Contribute to Textbook Affordability

This week, the Van Pelt and Opie Library and Campus Store are celebrating textbook affordability by promoting Course Reserve and a collaborative project between our two units that maintains a searchable list of course materials in the library’s collections.

There are three ways departments and instructors can further our mission to make a Michigan Tech education more affordable:

  1. Meet course material adoption deadlines (the fall 2024 deadline is Oct. 7).

  2. Utilize Course Reserve. Instructors may bring a copy of their textbooks to the library for students to access freely. To facilitate the process, complete and submit the Course Reserve Request form to place physical materials on Course Reserve in the library.

  3. Search the library’s catalog. Notify the library and Campus Store when you find your course materials, so that the library can add them to Course Reserve.

On behalf of the library and Campus Store, have a great semester!

Bridging Communities
The Bridging Communities Series at Michigan Tech offers students, faculty and staff opportunities to engage in meaningful conversations that explore different perspectives and foster understanding. Through workshops, panels, films and more, we will develop skills for respectful dialogue and learn to navigate challenging conversations with empathy and openness. Join us as we build a stronger, more connected community at Michigan Tech.

This program is partially sponsored by the Visiting Professor Program, which is funded through a grant to the Office of the Provost from the state of Michigan's King-Chávez-Parks Initiative.

Soccer Tabbed Sixth in GLIAC Preseason Coaches Poll

The Michigan Tech soccer team has been tabbed to finish sixth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference, according to the league's preseason coaches poll.

The Huskies earned 31 points in the poll, falling narrowly behind fifth-place Wisconsin-Parkside's 32 points. Northern Michigan amassed six first-place votes to top the poll with 62 points. Grand Valley State was close behind in second with the remaining three first-place votes, totaling 58 points. Saginaw Valley State (47 points) and Ferris State (45 points) were tabbed to finish third and fourth, respectively.

The Huskies will open their 2024 season on the road on Sept. 5, beginning head coach Melissa Kuhar's first year at the helm of the program. Last season, MTU finished with an overall record of 8-5-7 overall, went 7-2-5 in the GLIAC, and made their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2014-15.
