Essential Ed Employer Task Force Holds Meeting on Essential Abilities

The Essential Education leadership team would like to thank members of our Essential Ed Employer Task Force for meeting with our faculty and staff constructing the components of Michigan Tech’s Essential Ed initiative.

Employer Task Force members include: Stellantis, Gerdau, Michigan Scientific, Kimberly-Clark, Greenheck, Nexteer, Caterpillar, Plexus, General Motors and Security Vitals.

The mission of this task force is to help the Essential Education team develop effective communications to recruiting organizations regarding the many components of Michigan Tech’s Essential Ed initiative. This includes effectively communicating the Essential Abilities being acquired by participating students. The task force will continue as we build effective and engaging experiences that help develop the Essential Abilities sought by recruiting organizations in their future employees.

What are the Essential Abilities?
Michigan Tech’s current General Education curriculum has eight undergraduate student learning goals (USLGs). Of these, six are used in the assessment of General Education. These six include a total of 41 performance criteria. Our new Essential Education program reduces the number of USLGs to four, with 12 performance criteria that we call Essential Abilities. This reduction brings us in line with the number of learning goals and performance criteria at peer institutions and simplifies assessment within Essential Education.

Read about Essential Ed's four learning goals and their associated Essential Abilities at the Essential Education Newsblog.

CFRES Invites Community to Celebrate Expansion at Ford Center

Michigan Tech students, faculty, staff and the greater community are invited to a ribbon-cutting to mark the completion of the new Danis Room and patio area at the Ford Center. The event takes place at 3 p.m. next Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the Ford Center in Alberta, Michigan.

Attendees, please RSVP for the ribbon-cutting to help organizers know how many guests to expect.

The patio was made possible through a brick paver campaign that wrapped up July 4. The College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science appreciates the contributions of alumni and friends who purchased commemorative engravings for the spacious and welcoming addition to the center.

The Danis Room doubles the size of the Ford Center's previous meeting space, and now allows seating for 80-plus guests. It was made possible through the generosity of Steve Danis ’53.

University leadership will be on hand to mark the occasion. Light appetizers will be served.
