Domestic Violence: Understanding, Healing and Reclaiming Power

October is designated as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic violence, also known as intimate partner violence, is a serious and widespread problem. In the United States, one in four women and one in nine men experience contact sexual violence, physical violence and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime and report negative impacts such as injury, fear, concern for safety, and needing services (CDC, 2017).

"When people hear about survivors of narcissistic abuse or domestic violence, the immediate reaction is often judgment," writes Mariana Nakashima, senior administrative aide in International Programs and Services. "Survivors often face skepticism, disbelief, and even blame, especially if they didn’t report the abuse right away. This response not only dismisses the survivor’s pain but also ignores the complex dynamics of trauma, manipulation, and psychological torment."

In her guest blog, Nakashima discusses the complex nature of narcissistic abuse and the path to healing. Learn more on the Engagement and Belonging Newsblog.

Fall 2024 Midterm Grades Due Today

Midterm grades are due at noon today, Oct. 14.

Midterm grades must be submitted for all first-year students and transfer students with fewer than 30 credits. The Waino Wahtera Center for Student Success coordinates outreach to these students based on the midterm grades submitted. This supports timely intervention for students who may be experiencing academic and/or other difficulties.

Electronic Grade Submission
Instructors have two options for electronic grade submission. They may submit grades via Banner Self-Service by going directly into Banweb, entering grades and then clicking submit. Those with larger class sizes where grades have already been totaled in Canvas may submit grades via Canvas by going to CourseTools and using the Grade Wizard to first extract them from Canvas and then submit them to Banner.

If grades are submitted using Banner Self-Service, only the students who require a midterm grade will appear. For those who submit their grades via Canvas, a first-year student column has been added to identify these students in your course grade book.

Satisfactory grades (A-C) should be entered as “SA” and Unsatisfactory grades (CD-F) as “UN”.

Midterm grades are for full-semester courses only. Grades not turned in by the deadline will have an M (missing) grade assigned.

SS Brown Bag Lecture: Paul Bunyan and Settler Colonialism

Join the Department of Social Sciences (SS) today, Oct. 14, at noon in GLRC 202 or on Zoom for a special event hosted for the Department of Social Sciences’ Brown Bag Series.

Niiyokamigaabaw Deondre Smiles, an assistant professor of geography at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada, will be joining us to present their lecture: “Paul Bunyan & Settler Colonial Greenwashing of Indigenous Environments.”

Join the SS Brown Bag Lecture on Zoom.

Smiles is of Ojibwe, Black and Swedish descent and a citizen of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe. They are an Indigenous geographer whose research interests are multifaceted, including Indigenous geographies/epistemologies, science and technology studies, and tribal cultural resource preservation/protection.

Smiles’ talk centers around the American legend of Paul Bunyan and his blue ox, Babe, and how they have underpinned popular folk narratives about the development of the United States, particularly in the Upper Midwest, for over a century. However, the legacy of Paul Bunyan has a darker side — it serves to obscure the real-life dispossession and destruction of environments and spaces Indigenous peoples have inhabited and have had relationships with dating to before colonization.

Building off of the work done by Nik Nerburn in his zine “In The Shadow Of Paul Bunyan” (2014), this talk traces the history of the legend of Paul Bunyan. It places it alongside settler colonial development and environmental degradation, bringing these histories into conversation with awareness (or lack thereof) of surrounding historical and contemporary Indigenous relationships to land and environment in various American geographies.

We invite anyone to join. There will be time for conversation with Smiles after the lecture.

Questions about the event can be directed to Mark Rhodes at marhodes@mtu.edu.

This lecture is partially funded/sponsored by the Visiting Professor Program, which is funded by a grant to the Office of the Provost from the State of Michigan's King-Chávez-Parks Initiative. Matching support comes from the Department of Social Sciences.
