Notice of Planned Power Maintenance by UPPCO

Michigan Tech has received notice from the Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) regarding scheduled maintenance work on their power lines and substations, set to occur on Monday, Nov. 4, between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m.

This maintenance may temporarily disrupt our power supply from UPPCO. Our backup generators are prepared to provide power continuity if necessary. However, we advise everyone with sensitive equipment to consider isolating or powering down these devices as a precaution against potential fluctuations.

Please take any needed steps to protect your equipment, and let us know if you have questions. Contact Steve Store, energy plant manager, at 906-487-2706 (office), 906-390-6336 (cell) or scstore@mtu.edu.

Thank you for your cooperation and attention to this matter.

Midyear Commencement Volunteers Still Needed

The Commencement Team is still seeking volunteers for the 2024 Midyear Commencement ceremony, which will take place on Dec. 14 at 10:30 a.m. in the SDC Varsity Gym. We need volunteers to help with pre-ceremony setup, serve as greeters and ushers, coordinate graduate check-in, and assist guests with special seating accommodations.

There are also opportunities to volunteer on the days leading up to Midyear Commencement — on Dec. 12 during setup and on Dec. 13 during rehearsal — if that works better for your schedule. More information regarding the ceremony is available on the Commencement website.

Please sign up by Dec. 6 if you would like to volunteer. Contact Tiffany Jaeger at tiffanyj@mtu.edu if you have any questions.

This special event cannot happen without the help of our amazing Michigan Tech community!

Funding Available for Visiting Scholars

Funds are still available to support campus departments to invite scholars, potential faculty or research collaborators to Michigan Tech’s campus under the state of Michigan's King-Chávez-Parks (KCP) Visiting Professor Program (VPP). Funds can be used for visits through Sept. 30, 2025.

University departments or units are encouraged to apply for financial support to bring visiting scholars who provide underrepresented perspectives in their field of expertise to Michigan Tech’s campus. Visitors do not need a terminal degree or a faculty position to qualify for support. Supported visits can be as short as an afternoon, up to a week or longer. While on campus, visiting professors are to interact with faculty and students in the classroom, in seminars, in informal and formal group discussions, or while teaching a session during an academic or summer semester.

Applications must be received one month before a proposed visit for pre-approval by the state of Michigan. Funding requests can be made for up to $1,500; however, the department(s) or unit(s) must provide a minimum 1-to-1 match to covered expenses of KCP funds.

Learn more about the Visiting Professor Program, its purpose, requirements, and the application process. If you have any questions about the program, please contact Shannon Vairo in the provost's office.

A Cup of Joe with the Safety Crew

Michigan Tech’s Safety Team — Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and the Office of Risk, Insurance, Safety, Security, and Compliance (RISSC) — will be hosting our next monthly Safety Round Table: a place for all Huskies to share a cup of coffee and learn about the importance of campus health and safety.

We invite you to join us on Wednesday, Nov. 6, from 9-10 a.m. in MUB Ballroom B.

Topic: Can I throw this in the trash? Or dump it down the drain?

Enjoy a hot beverage and snacks during our short presentation on how to safely, legally and ethically dispose of that leftover can of paint, a half-used bottle of motor oil, an aerosol can with a faulty spray valve, a broken beaker, a used laboratory syringe, or even a lab full of “hazardous waste.” Our team members with expertise in chemical and biological safety will lead this conversation and answer your questions.

In addition, there will be an informal opportunity to talk with our campus safety professionals for other safety related questions and issues.

So mark your calendars and come ask the questions you have always wanted to ask and get the answers you need about Michigan Tech Safety programs, legal compliance issues, and additional resources… and have a cup of Joe with the Safety Crew!

Volleyball Drops Five-Setter to NMU

The Michigan Tech volleyball team dropped a five-set thriller to rival Northern Michigan on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at the SDC Gym.

The Huskies held four match points, but the Wildcats squeaked out the extended fifth, 20-18.

"What should've happened was for us to finish off the four times we had match point," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "You couldn't have asked for a tighter set in the fifth. They had 18 kills and we didn't have an error."

The Huskies continue their final home weekend by hosting Parkside at 5 p.m. today, Nov. 1, and Purdue Northwest at 3 p.m. for Senior Day tomorrow, Nov. 2.
