Faculty Leadership Exploration and Development Program

Faculty are invited to apply to the new Faculty Leadership Exploration and Development (FacultyLEAD) program that will be offered at Michigan Tech next year. FacultyLEAD will provide an extended opportunity to explore the challenges, complexities and rewards of leadership. It is designed for faculty who are in, or are considering, leadership roles in a range of contexts.

Applications for the first program cohort for the 2025-26 academic year are now being accepted. The program will accept up to 15 participants who are at the rank of associate professor or higher (either tenure or instructional track). More information about the program and how to apply is available on the FacultyLEAD webpage. Applications are due Jan. 10, 2025.

Extra Section of Bridge Design Class Added for Spring 2025

To increase flexibility for Michigan Tech's online students in both the civil engineering master's degree and graduate certificate programs, the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering is offering an additional hybrid section of CEE5261 Bridge Design and Construction for spring 2025.

This fundamental course, required for Michigan Tech’s online Bridge Analysis Design Construction certificate, provides a crucial overview of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials bridge design specifications.

USG Post-Election Stress Roundtable

Join Undergraduate Student Government (USG) for a Post-Election Stress Roundtable discussion on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 7-9 p.m. in MUB Ballroom B.

The roundtable will be a supportive space to discuss the 2024 General Election and the electoral process. Join us to share your thoughts and learn more about how U.S. elections are held. There will be guest speakers taking questions and discussing the election process.

Carved and Crafted Catering at Michigan Technological University invites you to join the C-Cubed Luncheon, held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. every Thursday in the Memorial Union Alumni Lounge (MUB 107). All faculty and staff, along with their guests, are invited.

Menu for Thursday, Nov. 21:

  • Chickpea and Tomato Salad (V) (AG)
  • Broccoli, Lemon, and Garlic Penne Pasta (V) (PR)

The C-Cubed lunch buffet menus are created and prepared by Chef Luis Delgado and his culinary team. As the name suggests, the meals are meant to foster conversation, community and collegiality. Attendees may bring their lunch instead of purchasing the buffet. Fruit-infused water, coffee and tea are available free to all attendees. All vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free items on the buffet are labeled for easy identification. Meals are for dine-in only, and personal containers and to-go meals are not permitted.

The buffet lunch is $15.50 per person. Cash, credit cards and gift cards are accepted. Gift cards can be purchased in the Memorial Union Office (MUB 101).

Physics Colloquium with Claudio Mazzoleni

Claudio Mazzoleni, physics professor at Michigan Technological University, will present at this week's Physics Colloquium. Mazzoleni's presentation is titled "Light-absorbing Particles in the Atmosphere."

The seminar will be presented at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21, in Fisher 139. The coffee hour will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the Fisher Hall Lobby.

On the Road

Jim Baker, associate vice president for research administration, provided a keynote presentation at the 2024 International Virtual Conference on Technovation, Technoentrepreneurship, and AI for Economic Diversification.

Baker presented on “The Journey from Invention to Innovation to Investability, A Systems Engineering Approach.”

The conference was hosted in Kuwait City and saw virtual participation across the globe to bring together internationally leading practitioners, researchers and educators to present and discuss practices and opportunities across the intersection of technology, entrepreneurship and innovation.

WLUC TV6 quoted Mark Rhodes (SS) and Michigan Tech undergraduate students Andie Kozakiewicz and Lauren Bartlett in a story about student participation in Visit Keweenaw’s Sustainable Tourism Series. As part of MTU’s Introduction to Sustainable Tourism class, the students shared insights on land planning, sustainable development and tourism in the Keweenaw.

Directed by Radcliffe, the performance emphasizes American expressionism, blending music and memory to create a unique theatrical experience.

Nature quoted Adjunct Professor Joshua Pearce (MSE) in a story about advancements in lab automation and robotics. Pearce shared his experience developing custom, cost-effective lab equipment using open-source hardware and software at Michigan Tech, highlighting how automation can enhance research without compromising student training.

Electron Microscopy Consultation Sessions

As part of the Applied Chemical and Morphological Analysis Laboratory’s (ACMAL’s) actions to strengthen the electron microscopy (EM) user base at Tech, Erico Freitas (MSE) is offering a few hours of free-of-charge consultations in November for the ACMAL user community.

The EM consultation sessions will take place on Monday afternoons. Freitas hopes to use his expertise on the field to discuss aspects of electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), microanalysis (EDS and EELS) experiments and data analysis, including sample preparation, to help ACMAL users to make the most of their beam time in our Electron Microscopy Facility.

Student Poster Session: 'Green Chemistry in Drug Synthesis'

To promote environmental sustainability awareness, the medicinal chemistry faculty in the Department of Chemistry (Athar Ata, Lanrong Bi, Shiyue Fang and Tarun Dam), together with IDEAHub educational innovation group members Maria Bergstrom (HU), Kelly Steelman (PsyHF) and Teresa Woods (Math), have organized a student poster session on "Green Chemistry in Drug Synthesis."

The poster session will be held today, Nov. 18, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the MUB Superior Room (MUB B001). Pizza will be served.

This event aims to emphasize the significance of eco-friendly practices in pharmaceutical development, encouraging students to explore sustainable approaches to drug synthesis. Inspired by the IDEAHub educational innovation training workshop, this poster session also serves as a platform for incorporating novel, sustainability-focused ideas into classroom teaching and enhancing educational engagement and environmental consciousness.
