Overwatch Wraps Up Fall Season with Top 4 Finish

The Michigan Tech Overwatch team concluded its fall 2024 season with a fierce second round exit in the playoffs. Although the playoff run ended sooner than hoped, the season was marked by strong teamwork, notable triumphs and unwavering resilience.

Finishing the regular season with an accomplished 6-2 record, the Huskies demonstrated individual achievement and collective development. They were able to start out the season strong and took every opportunity throughout the season to master new techniques, improve strategic understanding, and strengthen the team's camaraderie.

Hockey Swept by Mavs

The No. 20-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team fell to No. 17 Minnesota State 5-2 on Friday and 3-1 on Saturday at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. With the sweep, the Huskies dropped to 6-4-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the CCHA.

The Mavericks scored four goals in the third period to take the win on Friday.

"The better team won. I give them credit, but I think our defense is better than what we saw tonight," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "We scored on a 5-on-3 and stole a goal late in the first. From that point on, I don't think we did a whole lot offensively."

On Saturday, the Huskies opened the scoring in the second period on Jack Works' 20th career goal, but then surrendered three straight goals to the Mavericks.

"We put in a good effort tonight and stuck together. We were much better tonight," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "I think we played good enough to win, but their skilled individual players made some plays when they needed to."

Tomashek Excels, Men's Basketball Splits at St. Louis County Basketball Classic

The Michigan Tech men's basketball team fell to No. 6 University of Minnesota Duluth 80-70 to start the St. Louis County Basketball Classic on Friday night before topping No. 3 Minnesota State Moorhead 74-70 on Saturday.

Junior guard Marcus Tomashek led the Huskies in scoring in both games, pouring on 29 points (9-for-22) on Friday and a career-high 40 points on Saturday on 15-for-29 shooting. For his efforts, Tomashek was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week

Pete Calcaterra joined Tomashek in double-figure scoring with 13 points on Friday in a contest that saw five Huskies finish with four fouls in a physical defensive battle with the Bulldogs.

"I thought our guys really fought hard tonight in a very physical game against a veteran physical team," said Michigan Tech head coach Josh Buettner. "We struggled with foul trouble and execution but kept fighting."

Dawson Nordgaard was the lone Husky to join Tomashek with double-digit points on Saturday, scoring 10 points to go with 10 rebounds for his first career double-double in 23 minutes.

"That was a huge win for us. The guys brought it again today. It was good to get a win instead of a morale victory boost," Buettner said. "A lot of guys stepped up and made winning plays. The last ten minutes we were terrific defensively and we have one of the best players in the country to take over offensively and he was special and fun to watch."

Volleyball Falls in Marathon Match Against No. 1 Ferris State

The 2024 Michigan Tech volleyball season came to an end after a valiant effort against the nation's No. 1 ranked team, Ferris State, in the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals. The Huskies won the second and fourth sets but fell 15-9 in the fifth. They finished the season with a 17-12 overall record.

"Today may have been my proudest moment as a Husky," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "Short of pulling off that fifth set, there is literally no other way I would have preferred to end our season together. Anyone who witnessed today's match saw our team play our hearts out and leave it all out there. For our seniors to finish with that match was a real gift. I simply will never forget today and this team. It was an emotional past few days to say the least."

Men's Cross Country Places 23rd at NCAA Championships

On a rainy, muddy Saturday morning in Sacramento, CA, the No. 22 nationally-ranked Michigan Tech men's cross country team concluded the fall season with a 23rd-place team finish (596 points) at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships. No. 2 ranked Colorado School of Mines (63 points) won the race, knocking off No. 1 Wingate (66 points) for the team title.

Sam Lange finished his career as a Husky with a time of 31:12 (5:02 per mile average) and an 81st-place finish.

" This year was about returning to this stage, gaining experience, growing and building momentum for the future. We absolutely accomplished these things and have much to be proud of,"  "Finishing right about where we were ranked coming in is nothing to be sad about. As coaches and athletes, we wanted just a little more and felt we were capable of finishing a little higher, but it wasn't our day to do that.

"These guys gave everything they had today and fought really well for the full 10k," Tech cross country head coach Robert Young said. "When I think about our season, I'm very pleased with what we accomplished. This year was about returning to this stage, gaining experience, growing and building momentum for the future. We absolutely accomplished these things. I'm proud of where we are and am confident the best is yet to come."

Women's Basketball Drops Two on the Road

The Michigan Tech women's basketball team fell to St. Cloud State 72-61 on Saturday in St. Cloud and was outlasted by Minnesota Duluth 71-67 on Sunday afternoon in Duluth.

On Saturday, senior guard Isabella Lenz became the 31st player in program history to reach 1,000 career points with a team-leading 19-point effort in the loss to St. Cloud State.

"It was a hard-fought game," Tech women's basketball head coach Sam Clayton said. "They executed better down the stretch and we gave up too many 3's to their shooters. We'll be better tomorrow. But I'm super proud of Bella for scoring her 1,000th point and leading us this game and all season."

On Sunday, three Huskies reached double-digit scoring. First-year guard Kendall Standfest scored a career-high 18 points, graduate transfer Jane Tormanen netted 12, and Lenz had 10.

"Today was definitely a tough loss. I thought we took a step forward with both our offensive and defensive execution," said Clayton. "Now it's just limiting our consecutive mistakes so teams can't go on those big runs. We'll look to bounce back next weekend at home."
