Change to Process for Updating Direct Deposit Information in Banweb

Due to the recent increase in cyber fraud, we are making changes to the process for updating direct deposit information in Banweb. Effective immediately, in order to update your direct deposit routing information, you will be directed to a new webpage protected by Duo.  There, you will need to enter your current routing and account information prior to being able to enter your new information.  If you do not know your current information and would like to make changes, you will need to contact HR at hr-help@mtu.edu or 906-497-2280 for further instructions.

We have observed a rise in both the frequency and sophistication of phishing and financial fraud attempts. Fraudulent actors may impersonate IT Support, Human Resources, or other Michigan Tech staff and ask you to approve a Duo request or provide a Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) code. Please remember, no one from Michigan Tech will ever ask you for your Duo MFA code or password through any means (phone, chat, email or otherwise).

If you mistakenly accept a fraudulent Duo or MFA prompt, your account can be compromised within minutes. This could include changes to your direct deposit information and the addition of email filters to conceal warning messages. You will only receive an MFA prompt (sometimes called a "Duo push") when logging into a service that uses MTU Secure Sign-On (SSO). If you receive an unexpected MFA prompt — whether by phone, SMS or through the Duo app — decline it and report it as fraud via both the Duo app and to MTU IT at it-help@mtu.edu. Do not approve any unexpected MFA prompts, especially if multiple occur in rapid succession. If this happens, change your password immediately or contact IT at 906-487-1111 for assistance.

For more information on identifying phishing attempts and spam, please review our guidelines. If you have any questions or concerns about email fraud and security, reach out to IT at it-help@mtu.edu or call 906-487-1111.

Midyear Commencement Volunteers Still Needed!

Please sign up by Dec. 6 if you would like to volunteer. Contact Tiffany Jaeger at tiffanyj@mtu.edu if you have any questions.

This special event cannot happen without the help of our amazing Michigan Tech community!

Manufacturing Engineering Programs from MTU Go Online

Great news! The Department of Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology (MMET) has recently announced two new online programs: the MS and the PhD in Manufacturing Engineering. Previously, these programs were available only on campus.

The curricula of these programs, based on the Society of Manufacturing Engineers' Four Pillars of Manufacturing Knowledge, prepare students to tackle the challenges and embrace the opportunities of manufacturing in Industry 4.0.

These programs are not solely for those from a manufacturing engineering background either. Graduates from mechanical engineering, electrical or computer engineering, materials science and engineering, manufacturing engineering technology, biomedical engineering and more might benefit from these degrees.

Learn more details about these programs at Global Campus News.

A Cup of Joe with the Safety Crew

Michigan Tech’s Safety Team — Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and the Office of Risk, Insurance, Safety, Security, and Compliance (RISSC) — will be hosting our next monthly Safety Round Table: a place for all Huskies to share a cup of coffee and learn about the importance of campus health and safety.

We invite you to join us on Wednesday, Dec. 4, from 9-10 a.m. in MUB Ballroom B.

Topic: Five Steps to Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment

Enjoy a hot beverage and snacks while we will walk you through a five-step process for hazard identification and risk assessment. Using a laboratory accident as a case study, we will work through the hazard/risk assessment process to learn what could have been done to prevent the accident. For those who are concerned about safety in your workspace, lab or shop, come with examples of the situations that you think need improvement, and we will use your examples as the starting point for the hazard and risk assessment process.

In addition, there will be an informal opportunity to talk with our campus safety professionals for other safety-related questions and issues.

So mark your calendars and come ask the questions you have always wanted to ask and get the answers you need about Michigan Tech Safety programs, legal compliance issues, and additional resources… and have a cup of Joe with the Safety Crew!
