New Funding

Erin Smith (HU) is the principal investigator on a project that has received a $10,000 other sponsored activites grant from the Michigan Humanities Council.

The project is titled "41 North Film Festival 10th Anniversary Program."

Associate Professor Kathryn A. Perrine (Chem) and her team are the authors of an article published in Applied Surface Science on Nov 22.

The article is titled “Reactions of disinfectants at solution/iron interfaces: Modeling pipeline surface chemistry.”

Students are acknowledged who worked collaboratively on the project: Ph.D. student Subash Pandey (chemistry) and Ph.D. graduate Chathura de Alwis ’22 (Ph.D. Chemistry), and undergraduate students Danica Lemmons ’24 (B.S. Chemistry), Ryan Mackie ’23 (B.S. Chemistry) and Drew Kolodge ’23 (B.S. Materials Science and Engineering).

Their research finds iron surfaces, exposed to hypochlorite and monochloramine disinfectants, undergo severe oxidation and corrosion. At air/solution/iron interfaces film growth occurs through the adsorption of atmospheric gases, forming carbamate and carbonate films. Localized, heterogeneous corrosion products from monochloramine exposure also imply several mechanisms exist, leading to material degradation and decomposition of monochloramine to other by-products. These findings uncover the surface chemistry of pipelines ultimately impacting water quality.

This research was recently presented at the American Chemical Society conference held in August 2024 and the American Vacuum Society conference held in November 2024.

This project is supported by National Science Foundation CHE 2108316 and the 2022 Sandretto-Stackhouse Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (Lemmons). The Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences Institute is also acknowledged for support of the project.

Change to Table Tent Policy

Beginning January 6, 2025, Husky Eats and the Memorial Union Building will transition to a more sustainable advertising option by offering digital advertising within our spaces instead of printed table tents. This change reflects our commitment to sustainability while fostering a welcoming and positive dining environment for all students. We appreciate your cooperation and support as we implement this new approach.

Digital displays are a low-cost advertising method to reach a large number of students, staff, and faculty with announcements about current events for groups affiliated with Michigan Tech. Display use is intended for the promotion of individual events, not consecutive/routine marketing or solicitation and is at the discretion of Husky Eats. Digital display images must be approved by Husky Eats following the policy and steps posted on the Dining Services website.
