This is a reminder for departments to continue communicating procedures regarding weather-related absences.
During times when weather conditions deteriorate, each member of the University community must exercise personal judgment about their ability to get to or from campus safely. Interruptions in work due to weather are no different from other events that cause us to leave work early or arrive late.
If any employee’s work schedule is affected by winter weather, the first thing they should do is contact their supervisor directly and explain the situation. Hourly employees may use vacation or comp time to make up for hours missed due to bad weather. Exempt employees are expected to fulfill their regular job responsibilities.

A collaborative Michigan Tech research team has co-authored a paper published in ACS Applied Bio Materials.
The MTU team includes Department of Chemistry Ph.D. students Adenike Mary Olowolagba, Omowunmi Rebecca Aworinde, Micah Olamide Idowu and Dilka Liyana Arachchige; research scientist Sushil K. Dwivedi (Chem); high school student Crystal Wang; undergraduate students Olivya Rose Graham, Joseph Peters and Grace Rickauer; and Professors Thomas Werner (BioSci), Athar Ata, Rudy Lin Luck and Haiying Liu (all three Chem).
The paper is titled “Near-Infrared Probes Designed with Hemicyanine Fluorophores Featuring Rhodamine and 1,8-Naphthalic Derivatives for Viscosity and HSA Detection in Live Cells.”
This research was supported by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) of the National Institutes of Health through awards 2R15GM114751 and R15GM114751 to Liu, and R15GM146206-01 along with its two supplemental grants (1R15GM146206-01S1 and 3R15GM146206-01S2) to Liu and Luck. These supplemental grants enabled the purchase of a cell incubator with oxygen level control and a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), respectively.
Additional funding from the National Science Foundation under award number 2117318 supported the acquisition of a new NMR spectrometer, essential for characterizing the chemical structures of the fluorescent probes, with Liu as one of the grant recipients.
The Daily Mining Gazette quoted Michigan Tech junior and Blue Key member Andrew Hemstreet (electrical engineering) in a story about the new laser light show debuted during this year’s Winter Carnival All-Nighter. The show, inspired by Carnival’s medieval theme and organized by Blue Key, was projected onto the Walker Arts and Humanities Center.
