HRI 2023 Summer Fellowship Awards Announced

The Health Research Institute (HRI) at Michigan Tech is pleased to announce Summer Fellowship awardees for 2023. Congratulations to all recipients!

HRI Summer Fellowship awardees are:

  • Mohanish Chandurkar, Biomedical Engineering
  • Catherine Rono, Biological Sciences

HRI Student Fellowships are awarded three times a year. More information can be found on the HRI website.

Free Sustainability Film: 'Gather'

"Gather" will be shown at 7 p.m. next Thursday (May 18) at the U. J. Noblet Forestry Building in Noblet 144. Refreshments will be hosted by the Keweenaw Land Trust.

The discussion following the film will be led by Sierra Ayres and Rachael Pressley ’14 (B.S. Geology).

Film Description
"Gather" explores the growing movement amongst Native Americans to reclaim their spiritual, political and cultural identities through food sovereignty, while battling the trauma of centuries of genocide. Run time is 75 minutes.

Discussion Facilitators
Sierra Ayers is the program coordinator for Walking the Path Together in the Department of Social Work at Northern Michigan University and a member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Lake Superior Band of Ojibwe. She graduated from the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis in 2019 with a master's in social work, and from the University of Michigan in 2017 with a B.A. in Sociology.

Rachael Pressley is a regional planner at the Western U.P. Planning and Development Region (WUPPDR), where she works with local communities to collaboratively plan rural food systems, hazard mitigation and climate adaptation, and accessible recreation. She earned a B.S. in Geology from Michigan Tech in 2014.

PhD Proposal Defense: Zhiyuan Lu, CS

Department of Computer Science (CS) graduate student Zhiyuan Lu will present his Ph.D. dissertation proposal next Friday (May 19) from 10-11 a.m. via Zoom.

The title of Lu's proposal is "Optimizing Memory Management for Improved Efficiency in High-Performance Computing Systems." Lu is advised by Jianhui Yue.

Esports Spring Recap

Michigan Tech Esports wrapped up its spring season earlier this month. The Huskies play Apex: Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, League of Legends, Overwatch 2, Rocket League, Super Smash Brothers: Ultimate, and Valorant.

Season highlights for Tech including bringing home the first GLIAC Esports Championship this spring, alongside one NACE Conference Championship, and making four national playoff appearances.

Plastics Recycling Update mentioned Michigan Tech in a story about recently awarded grants in support of recycling research in North America. The story highlighted a $321,000 grant awarded to MTU to support development of a solvent-based recycling technology that separates specific resins from landfill-bound mixed plastic streams.

Maine's Portland Press Herald mentioned Michigan Tech in a story accompanying a video of an alleged Maine wolf recorded by a trail camera. The trail camera was placed by the Maine Wolf Coalition as part of wolf research being conducted in the state. The coalition has collected and submitted multiple scat samples to Michigan Tech for analysis since 2019, according to the story.

The Mining Journal mentioned Michigan Tech in a feature story on former Husky basketball player Jake Witt, who signed a four-year NFL contract worth nearly $4 million on May 5. Witt, who transferred to Northern Michigan University to pursue a major not offered by Tech, was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Graduate School Closed Friday Afternoon
