Jen Van Essen Named President-Elect of WACAC

The Wisconsin Association of Admissions Counselors (WACAC) has chosen Jen Van Essen (ADM) as president-elect.

Van Essen has worked to expand Michigan Tech’s footprint in Wisconsin as a regional admissions manager since 2008. Her selection comes on the heels of Tara Brewer (ADM) being elected as a board director of the Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling (IACAC).

“Jen is a true leader in the Wisconsin admissions circle and has served tirelessly for WACAC for quite a few years. It is well-deserved to see her be recognized for that effort. This, in addition to Tara’s recognition, helps solidify that Michigan Tech has a world class admissions team,” said Chrissy Grotzke, senior associate director of admissions.

Van Essen previously worked on Michigan Tech’s campus as the director of student activities.

Sam Lange Bows Out in 1,500-meter Prelims at NCAA Championships

Michigan Tech senior Sam Lange concluded his track and field career as a Husky last Thursday, finishing 15th in the men's 1,500-meter preliminary round at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Emporia, Kansas.

"I did everything I could, and that's all I can ask for," Lange said. "My positioning was perfect, but the kick just wasn't there when I needed it."

Lange, a two-time GLIAC runner-up in the 1,500 meters, was in qualifying position heading into the final lap. He finished in eighth place in a time of 3:58.96.

"I'm just super thankful to have made it to Nationals and receive an immense amount of support from friends and family," Lange said. "The people are what this sport is about, and I couldn't have found better people."

Fall 2024 Ecology-Focused DC Trip: Are You Interested?

Michigan Tech's faculty trip to Washington, D.C., has a long-standing tradition of connecting researchers to funding agencies and other collaboration opportunities in the nation’s capital city.

New this year, the Research Development (RD) office is helping to plan research theme-focused trips while keeping many of the programmatic staples. With focused trips, we are expecting to have two to three smaller trips per year. We plan for the Fall 2024 DC Trip to have an environment/ecology science research focus. The Spring 2025 DC Trip will have a health focus, supported by the Health Research Institute (HRI).

This fall, the trip has been set for the week of Sept. 16 due to the Association of Ecosystem Research Centers meeting on Sept. 17-18. This conference involves program officer visits as well. We look forward to working with potential participants on the logistics of pulling together an impactful experience.

If you have any interest at all in the Fall 2024 DC Trip, please email Sarah Atkinson at sjbird@mtu.edu.

The first information session will be held today (May 28) from noon to 1 p.m. via Zoom. Join to learn more about the trip and how this is a collaborative opportunity to make the trip most impactful for you.

The RD team is looking forward to working with you!
