FSO — Did You Know?

Financial Services and Operations (FSO) will periodically be sharing information regarding a specific topic to increase awareness and knowledge in an “FSO — Did You Know?” article. If there is an FSO topic that you’d like to learn more about, please email fso@mtu.edu.

Check Requests
When submitting a check request, remember to include the payee’s personal address or business remit to address rather than your department address. The only exemptions to this rule are for check requests related to student organizations and human subjects research (HSR) payments. If a check needs to be sent to your department, choose “Mail to Department'' in the mailing instructions.

Also, ensure that a vendor ID or M# is included on the check request. Vendor information can be found by querying the vendor search. To locate an individual’s M# in Banner, you can query the Banner 9 SPAIDEN form.

Please note that if the request involves a new vendor, there may be a delay as we gather necessary documents. Providing documentation with the vendor’s contact information can expedite this process.

If you have questions regarding check requests, email invoice@mtu.edu.

A team from the Department of Chemistry at Michigan Technological University has published an article in the American Chemical Society (ACS) journal Inorganic Chemistry.

The MTU team is led by Christo Z. Christov and includes Ph.D. students Midhun G. Thomas (first author) and Simahudeen Bathir J.S. Rifayee; Ph.D. graduate Shobhit Chaturvedi ’22 (M.S. Ph.D. Chemistry), currently a postdoctoral researcher at UCLA; postdoctoral researcher Koteswara Rao Gorantla; and recent graduates Jon Wildey ’24 (B.S. Chemical Engineering) and Walter White ’24 (B.S. Chemistry); as well as collaborator Christopher Schofield from the University of Oxford, U.K.

The article is titled "The Unique Role of the Second Coordination Sphere to Unlock and Control Catalysis in Nonheme Fe(II)/2-Oxoglutarate Histone Demethylase KDM2A."

This study of the catalytic mechanism of nonheme Fe(II)/2-oxoglutarate (2OG)-dependent oxygenase KDM2A reveals a unique conformational change in the second coordination sphere residue that unlocks the catalytic mechanism of KDM2A.

Together with the Karabencheva-Christova lab's research, this research contributes to Michigan Tech’s earned international recognition as a center of excellence in computational bio-inorganic chemistry.

This research was supported by the NIH/NIGMS grant 1R15GM139118-01A1 to C.Z.C.

Reminder

Cliff Drive Closed Saturday

Cliff Drive will be closed to all traffic from Parking Lot 1 eastward on Saturday (June 1). A new sanitary sewer line for the East Hall project is being installed across Cliff Drive near the entrance of Parking Lot 10, and this will cut off the exit access at the east end of Cliff Drive.

Access around the closure through the construction site will be available for emergency use only.
