Parade of Nations Route Announced

The route of the 2024 Parade of Nations has been announced! This year's parade will be held Sept. 21 with the theme "Holidays Around the World."

The day of the parade, participating walkers will gather at the Rozsa Center to get their national flags, representing countries from around the world. Parade floats will stage in Parking Lot 1 by the Administration Building, accessible by Cliff Drive.

The parade will begin at 11 a.m. The parade walkers will begin the official parade through the Michigan Tech campus. Parade floats will line up at the stop sign at the Cliff Drive and College Avenue intersection while the walkers approach. As the parade walkers pass through the new Alumni Gateway Arch onto College Avenue, parade guides will direct floats to join, alternating walkers and floats.

The route will take the full mixed parade all along College Avenue through downtown Houghton, dazzling crowds. Then, the parade will turn right onto Quincy Street, and then make another right onto Lakeshore Drive.

The parade will end at Dee Stadium for food and entertainment.

A map of the route can be seen in a Michigan Tech Parade of Nations Facebook post.

SDC, Gates Tennis Center Closed Tuesday

Michigan Tech's Public Safety and Police Services and local emergency responders will conduct a mock disaster training at the SDC and Gates Tennis Center on Tuesday (June 4). As a result, both the SDC and Gates Tennis Center will be closed to the public as actors participate in the full-scale simulation of emergency disaster scenarios.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we support our local emergency responders' training for potential public health emergencies.

Laura Kasson Fiss Wins Book Prize

Laura Kasson Fiss (PHC) has won the inaugural 2023 First Book Prize from the Victorian Popular Fiction Association for "The Idler's Club: Humour and Mass Readership from Jerome K. Jerome to P. G. Wodehouse" (Edinburgh UP, 2023).

Fiss will receive a £200 cash prize and be honored at the Annual General Meeting of the upcoming VPFA Annual Conference, being held at Canterbury Christ Church University on July 15-17.

The judging panel, Professors Anne-Marie Beller, Kate Newey and Jennifer Phegley, wrote in their decision:

"[Fiss’] exploration of this particular cohort of writers as a literal and metaphorical ‘club’ makes an original contribution to the study of these famous but largely neglected figures who have had a lasting impact on contemporary popular cultural forms. … A consideration of the popular lies at the heart of the study [and] Fiss brings fresh and interesting new ideas to the table. … [Fiss] moves smoothly and cogently between textual analysis, literary critical analysis, and a materialist historical framing of the texts. This is not presented as just context, but is a fundamental understanding of the ways in which this kind of periodical writing participates in a material and industrial landscape of literary production. … The book is a good read, and takes on its subject matter with appropriate humour as well as authority."

The publication of "The Idler's Club" was highlighted in January 2023 on the Humanities News, Features, and Other Updates blog.

Michigan Tech alumni Chathura de Alwis ’22 (Ph.D. Chemistry) and Kayleigh Wahr ’22 (B.S. Chemistry) and Associate Professor Kathryn A. Perrine (Chem) are the authors of an article published in the Journal of Physical Chemistry A of the American Chemical Society on May 8.

The article is titled "Influence of Cations on Direct CO2 Capture and Mineral Film Formation: The Role of KCl and MgCl2 at the Air/Electrolyte/Iron Interface."

The study finds that Mg2+ and K+ influence atmospheric CO2 adsorption to form cation-specific carbonate films through iron surface oxidation and corrosion at the air/solution/iron interface. These findings are relevant for uncovering mechanisms of CO2 capture as well as planetary and environmental processes.

Their work was featured on the supplementary cover of the May 23 issue.

This project was supported by NASA under award number NNX15AJ20H through the Michigan Space Grant Consortium and by the National Science Foundation MRI CHE 1725818.
