On the heels of one major Michigan Tech research milestone and on the cusp of another, Andrew Barnard takes the helm of the University's research efforts as the new vice president for research.

Barnard has a strong record of success at Tech, having previously served as director of the Great Lakes Research Center, associate professor of mechanical engineering, and faculty advisor to the Strategic Education through Naval Systems Experiences (SENSE) Enterprise team. He was also a 2019 recipient of the University’s Distinguished Teaching Award.

Barnard’s emphasis on interdisciplinary team science, place-based research and Tech’s industry connections bodes well for the future of research at Michigan’s flagship technological university. Read more about his vision for Michigan Tech research in a Q&A at Michigan Tech News.

New Graduate Scholarship Available on Digital Commons

The Graduate School proudly announces the publication of 63 new dissertations, theses and reports in Digital Commons, Michigan Tech’s institutional repository for scholarly research. The work of our spring graduates (31 Ph.D. students and 32 master's students) and their faculty advisors is now a part of Michigan Tech's exceptional contribution to academic pursuit and real-world problem solving.

It is well worth a visit to Digital Commons @ Michigan Tech to see for yourself the far-reaching impact of our graduates’ research. Nearly 270,000 downloads of 2,889 Michigan Tech dissertations, theses and reports, from 1998 through today, have been made this year alone. In real time, you can watch an interactive map showing MTU scholarship — including the work of our most recent graduates — being viewed around the world.

The next round of graduate students are preparing for their own publications. Access to the recent Submission 101 seminar recording is now available to guide candidates through the submission process — from planning their defense to submitting their final document.

A team of researchers from Michigan Tech recently published a paper in ACS Applied Bio Materials.

The team includes Ph.D. students Adenike Olowolagba, Micah Idowu, Dilka Arachchige and Omowunmi Aworinde, Research Scientist Sushil Dwivedi (Chem), undergraduate student Olivya Rose Graham, Professor Thomas Werner (BioSci), and Associate Professor Rudy Luck and Professor Haiying Liu (both Chem).

The paper is titled "Syntheses and Applications of Coumarin-Derived Fluorescent Probes for Real-Time Monitoring of NAD(P)H Dynamics in Living Cells across Diverse Chemical Environments."

This research was supported by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institutes of Health, through Award Numbers 2R15GM114751 and R15GM114751 (Liu), and R15 GM146206-01 (Liu and Luck). Additionally, the National Science Foundation provided financial backing through Award Number 2117318, which facilitated the acquisition of a new NMR spectrometer for characterizing the chemical structures of the fluorescent probes. Liu was a recipient of this grant as a co-PI. Computational calculations for the fluorescent probes were carried out using the high-performance computing infrastructure at Michigan Tech.

Liu said the invaluable support from these funding entities is deeply appreciated and has been instrumental in advancing this research.
