Retirement Planning Phishing Alert

Please be aware that phishing attacks are circling that encourage Michigan Tech employees to reach out for retirement or pension planning to groups that are not affiliated with Michigan Tech.

Please be aware that as an active Michigan Tech employee, you will only be contacted directly by TIAA CREF, Fidelity or MPSERS (Office of Retirement Services).

Our email system does attempt to identify spam emails and phishing attacks, and frequently isolates these emails — but some do get through. Please reach out to Benefits Services at hr-help@mtu.edu if you are questioning the validity of anyone contacting you for retirement planning.

Contact information for TIAA CREF, Fidelity and MPSERS can be found on Human Resources’ Retirement Planning page in the section titled "Retirement Planning."

A team of researchers based at Michigan Tech recently published a paper in the Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B: Biology.

The team includes Ph.D. students Dilka Arachchige and Adenike Olowolagba, along with Research Scientist Sushil Dwivedi (Chem), undergraduate students Joseph Peters and Ashlyn Colleen Beatty, high school students Alicia Guo and Crystal Wang, Associate Professor Thomas Werner (BioSci), and Associate Professor Rudy Luck and Professor Haiying Liu (both Chem).

The paper is titled "Dynamic Insights into Mitochondrial Function: Monitoring Viscosity and SO2 Levels in Living Cells."

This research was funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institutes of Health, through Award Numbers 2R15GM114751 and R15GM114751 (Liu), and R15 GM146206-01 (Liu and Luck). The National Science Foundation also provided support through Award Number 2117318, which enabled the purchase of a new NMR spectrometer for the characterization of the chemical structures of the fluorescent probes, with Liu as a co-PI. High-performance computational calculations for the fluorescent probes were performed using the infrastructure at Michigan Tech.

Liu said the generous support from these funding agencies has been crucial in advancing this research.

Haiying Liu (Chem) is the co-author of a paper published in Spectrochimica Acta Part A: Molecular and Biomolecular Spectroscopy.

The paper is titled "New Rhodamine-based sensor for high-sensitivity fluorescence tracking of Cys and simultaneously colorimetric detection of H2S."

Haiying Liu (Chem) is the co-author of a paper published in Talanta.

The paper is titled "An extra-large Stokes shift near-infrared fluorescent probe for specific detection and imaging of cysteine."

On the Road

Bhisham Sharma (ME-EM) is traveling to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada to attend the 16th World Congress on Computational Mechanics and 4th Pan American Congress on Computational Mechanics (WCCM-PANACM Vancouver 2024) from July 21-26.

In the News

Sarah Hoy (CFRES) was quoted by The Iron Mountain Daily News in a story about how moose can teach us about human aging. A study co-authored by Hoy earlier this year linked periodontitis to severe forms of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis in moose. The research highlights the similarities between human and veterinary medicine. The study was the subject of a post on MTU’s Unscripted Research Blog in January. The story was picked up from Michigan State University’s Spartan Newsroom.

Great Lakes Now picked up the July 19 episode of the Points North podcast featuring Kiko de Melo e Silva (CEGE). The episode, titled “Pedaling to the Beat of His Own Drum,” discusses de Melo e Silva’s status as a local legend among Upper Peninsula mountain bike race competitors. Most compete with expensive gear and bikes, but de Melo e Silva rides a $150 BMX bike named Glamour Girl.
