Michigan Tech Research Award Winner Tracks Impacts of Volcano Behavior Around the World

A world authority on satellite-powered analysis of global volcanic activity, Simon Carn (GMES) is the winner of the 2024 Michigan Technological University Research Award.

Carn has scaled many mountains during his career — it’s his love for climbing, hiking and travel that led him to study geology. “Geology provided a pathway to a deeper understanding of landscape formation and evolution,” said Carn.

In a Michigan Tech News Q&A, Carn reflects on his research, the role he and Michigan Tech play in the worldwide volcanology community, and why people are — and should be — interested in volcanoes.

A team from the Department of Chemistry at Michigan Technological University has published a research article in the American Chemical Society journal Biochemistry. The article was showcased on the journal's supplementary cover.

The team is led by Tatyana Karabencheva-Christova and includes postdoctoral researcher Koteswara Rao Gorantla (first author); Ph.D. student Anandhu Krisnan; Ph.D. graduate Sodiq Waheed '23, currently a researcher at Eli Lilly in Indianapolis, Indiana; and Ph.D. graduate Ann Varghese '23, currently a postdoctoral researcher at the National Center for Toxicological Research, Food and Drug Administration in Jefferson, Arkansas; as well as undergraduate students Isabella DiCastri, Ciara LaRouche and Meredith Paik.

The article is titled "Novel Insights into the Catalytic Mechanism of Collagenolysis by Zn(II)-Dependent Matrix Metalloproteinase-1."

Professor Gregg B. Fields from Florida Atlantic University was a collaborator on the study.

The research highlights novel insights into Zn(II)-dependent enzymatic collagen hydrolysis and reveals the critical role of dynamic evolvement, thermal effects and entropy in the process. This study is a continuation of Karabencheva-Christova’s established research at Michigan Tech on metalloenzymes.

This research is funded by NIH grant 2R15GM132873-02 to Karabencheva-Christova.

The team would like to thank Sarah Atkinson (RD) for the assistance with image preparation.
