Register for the Global and Community Engagement Conference

The Pavlis Honors College invites students, faculty, staff and community members to join us for the Global and Community Engagement Conference at the Memorial Union Ballroom on Oct. 12.

This conference will showcase the innovative ways in which members of the Michigan Tech community are tackling real-world challenges through global and local engagement. From student-led initiatives to collaborative research projects, attendees will explore how to make a meaningful impact both locally and globally.

Keynote speaker Lisa M. Dietlin, an internationally recognized philanthropy and transformational change expert, will deliver an inspiring address on becoming a "global and smart philanthropist." Dietlin will share practical strategies for ensuring that your efforts — whether time, money or expertise — are truly making a difference. Her keynote will equip you with tools to begin implementing change immediately, while her compelling stories will highlight the power of philanthropy to transform lives and communities.

In addition to the keynote, the conference will feature workshops, panels and discussions designed to inspire and empower participants to become active agents of change. It will also feature a Volunteer and Resource Fair where participants can discover a variety of volunteer opportunities, both on campus and throughout the Copper Country. Whether you’re interested in global issues, local community projects or both, this conference has something for you.

Don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity! Register for the conference to secure your spot.

We look forward to seeing you at this year’s Global and Community Engagement Conference, where together, we can make a difference.

Laboratory Pre-Inspection Documents

As a part of continuously improving the culture of safety across campus, the Research Integrity Office is updating the laboratory inspection process. Laboratory safety inspections are required for all research spaces (teaching, instructional and nonresearch spaces not included).

The pre-inspection process will collect required documentation from each research laboratory manager (primary faculty/staff member responsible for the laboratory). Department safety liaisons will also be contacted and engaged throughout the process.

If you are the primary person responsible for a laboratory, please submit the following forms by Dec. 13.

This will ensure that all researchers and their staff are aware of all the hazards in their laboratories and have the tools and plan to mitigate them, and ensure they have the relevant training they need to do their jobs safely and effectively. These documents are required during unscheduled regulatory MIOSHA inspections.

Laboratory inspection scheduling will begin in January 2025 and be prioritized based on the submitted hazard / risk assessments.

Please note: If you currently have a hazard / risk assessment, you cannot submit an old assessment. Please use the form above.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to labinspections@mtu.edu. Thank you!

Reminders

Enhance Your Teaching Skills with the Inclusive STEM Teaching Project Course

Michigan Tech instructors are encouraged to participate in the Inclusive STEM Teaching Project (ISTP), a six-week course beginning the week of Oct. 7. This course presents a unique opportunity for professional development, focusing on the critical topics of equity and inclusion in STEM education.

Facilitated by a local cohort, this course is designed to provoke deep reflection and foster meaningful discussions on creating inclusive learning environments within various institutional contexts. Whether you're a doctoral student, postdoctoral researcher or faculty member, this course aims to enhance your awareness, self-efficacy and ability to cultivate inclusive STEM classrooms for your students.

Participants will engage in a range of activities aimed at examining issues of diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education. Moreover, instructors will gain practical insights into identifying and implementing learner-centered structures and strategies to better support their students' diverse needs.

The online portion of the course is a flexible commitment of approximately three to four hours per week; this allows the course to fit into your busy schedule while providing valuable skills and knowledge to enhance your teaching practice. Participation in the local learning community enhances the benefits of the course by providing a venue for weekly 50-minute facilitated discussions that dig deeper into the course content, connect participants to others in the community and contextualize applications. Learning communities usually consist of about 8-12 other learners from Michigan Tech who are also enrolled in the course.

Visit the official course page for more information and to register for the online portion. To express your preferences for participating in your local learning community, complete the Fall 2024 iSTEM Local Learning Community form. We encourage participants to register by next Monday, Sept. 30.
