CFRES Invites Community to Celebrate Expansion at Ford Center

Michigan Tech students, faculty, staff and the greater community are invited to a ribbon-cutting to mark the completion of the new Danis Room and patio area at the Ford Center. The event takes place at 3 p.m. next Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the Ford Center in Alberta, Michigan.

Attendees, please RSVP for the ribbon-cutting to help organizers know how many guests to expect.

The patio was made possible through a brick paver campaign that wrapped up July 4. The College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science (CFRES) appreciates the contributions of alumni and friends who purchased commemorative engravings for the spacious and welcoming addition to the center.

The Danis Room doubles the size of the Ford Center's previous meeting space, and now allows seating for 80-plus guests. It was made possible through the generosity of Steve Danis ’53.

University leadership will be on hand to mark the occasion. Light appetizers will be served.

Deep-Mapping Institute Brings Keweenaw Time Traveler to the World

Don Lafreniere (SS) is leading a team of researchers, staff and students from Michigan Tech and Wayne State University on a project supported by a $250,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to support the development of the NEH Community Deep Mapping Institute.

The Deep Mapping Institute will run for one year, beginning in January 2025. It includes both a virtual component and an immersive two week on-site component taking place on the Keweenaw Peninsula in July 2025.

Co-hosted by Michigan Tech and Wayne State University, the institute will bring 40 people from around the world to Houghton and the surrounding region to learn about deep mapping and the other technologies used in the award-winning Keweenaw Time Traveler and the subsequently developed Hamtramck Explorer.

Get details on the institute and the fellowships available (application deadline is Nov. 22) on the College of Sciences and Arts Newsblog.

For the Huskies, the No. 26 men finished as runner-ups in the Jo Rider men's Maroon race, scoring 91 points overall, and Sophia Rhein placed sixth in a field of over 300 runners in the Suzy Wilson women's Maroon race.

The men were led by Sam Lange, who finished eighth in a field of over 350 runners. Rhein led the women's squad to a seventh-place team finish with 193 points, tying Minnesota Duluth, who earned the tiebreaker. The MTU women were six points shy of fifth place.

"I was very pleased with how we ran today. We know this course runs tough and it was pretty hot again this year, amplifying the difficulty," Tech head coach Robert Young said. "We struggled in the heat here last year and learned some lessons we were able to apply to our performance this year."

Despite holding a 1-0 lead early in the first half, the Huskies fell to the No. 1 Lakers, who pulled ahead with a second-half goal on Sunday. MTU lost 2-1 at Kearly Stadium.
