Changes to New Student Orientation Coming Summer 2025

Starting in summer 2025, Michigan Tech will be launching summer Orientation sessions. The purpose of hosting summer Orientation is to create an opportunity for students to come to Houghton and connect with each other, our amazing campus and their academic departments early in the summer.

Summer Orientation sessions will also give students the opportunity to ensure they have all the necessary placement exams, test scores and other paperwork needed to be well prepared for fall 2025. We plan to hire 15-25 Summer Orientation Ambassadors in addition to the 75-80 Orientation Team Leaders (OTLs) who are hired for O-Week.

New students will be invited to register for one of four summer sessions beginning in February. We will start communicating this once the students receive their financial aid packets.

Summer Orientation Session Dates:

  • Orientation Session 1: Sunday and Monday, June 22-23
  • Orientation Session 2: Thursday and Friday, June 26-27
  • Orientation Session 3: Sunday and Monday, July 13-14
  • Orientation Session 4: Thursday and Friday, July 17-18

For students who are unable to attend, we will work with their advisors and other staff to set up virtual appointments and have a day scheduled during O-Week for them to complete any tasks needed before the semester begins. We understand that not everyone will be able to travel to campus during the summer, including international students and students from states far away. We will do our best to accommodate students who are unable to attend.

Fall Orientation Week will continue to be the week prior to the start of the fall semester. New students will be given the option to move into the residence halls between Sunday and Tuesday, with O-Week activities beginning Tuesday night. OTLs will still be part of welcoming our new students, and we will still offer all the wonderful activities and events to connect new students to campus and the community. Registered student organizations will have the opportunity to showcase their organizations throughout the week, beginning on Sunday.

A cross-campus committee is working on the details now and will share more information as it becomes available.

How to Request Employment Accommodations Due to a Disability

If you are a Michigan Tech employee (faculty, staff, student) with a disability, you may qualify for a reasonable accommodation to perform your job. A reasonable accommodation is a modification or change to a task, the environment or a procedure to enable an individual with a disability to perform the essential functions of a position.

Please visit Access and Disability for information on accommodations and the link to the accommodation request form. Once the request is received, the University’s ADA coordinator and employee will begin the interactive process to determine a reasonable accommodation.

If you are a supervisor with an employee who mentions having difficulties performing their job because of a disability, please contact the ADA coordinator at adacoordinator@mtu.edu, and refer the employee to Access and Disability for more information.

If you are a student with a disability and would like information about academic accommodations, please contact Student Disability Services at sds@mtu.edu.

CISR Early Career/New Research Directions Research Award RFP

The Center for Innovation in Sustainability and Resilience (CISR) is accepting applications for the Sustainable & Resilient Communities Early Career/New Research Directions Award.

These awards are designed to complement start-up packages for early-career faculty or to support established researchers who are pursuing new ideas or topics around sustainability and resilience themes. Funds are provided by the Tech Forward Initiative on Sustainability and Resilience. Award eligibility requires being an affiliate of CISR (open to anyone on campus) and contributing to the CISR research community through future external funding proposal submissions.

Application deadlines are Friday, Nov. 1, and April 1, 2025, but rolling submissions and inquiries are encouraged.

Awards are targeted in the range of $3,000-$5,000. The timing and types of expenditures are flexible, but generally should occur before June 30, 2025, and support student hourly work, obtaining seed data, professional development, and/or pilot/proof of concept work, etc., with an emphasis on activities that can contribute to future research proposal development.

In your application, please include the following:

  • A title indicating whether the submission is to be considered for an Early Career or New Directions award.
  • A brief description of your proposed work and how it relates to sustainability and/or resilience. Please include a paragraph that describes how this award will propel future research productivity in sustainability and resilience research.
  • A detailed budget and budget justification, including project start and end date, and details on what additional resources, if any, are being leveraged for the proposed project. These additional resources may include other sources of funding, other data or laboratory needs, etc.

Proposal narratives, budgets and budget justifications should be submitted as a single document via email to Chelsea Schelly at cschelly@mtu.edu. Potential submitters are encouraged to reach out with questions or to pitch ideas before developing a proposal.

CISR looks forward to receiving your inquiries and applications!

Volunteers Needed for 41 North Film Festival

Be a part of the action and volunteer with 41 North Film Festival as we celebrate our 10th anniversary! This year’s festival will take place Nov. 7-10, and we need your help to make it happen! We welcome film enthusiasts, members of the campus community and local area residents. Individuals and groups are invited to join us as volunteers.

Our volunteers help us keep 41 North free and open to the public, and are an integral part of the festival. Volunteers may assist with welcoming festival attendees, ushering and answering general questions. Help is needed for all four days of the festival; volunteer for one film or for the whole festival — it’s up to you! Volunteers will receive a free T-shirt as a thank-you. We look forward to having you on our team!

What do I do when volunteering at 41N?
As a volunteer usher, you play a critical role in creating a joyful experience at arts events. With Rozsa and 41N leadership, you and other ushers work together to greet guests, admit folks into the theater, assist with seating and wayfinding, connect guests to venue accommodations, and support effective crowdflow and emergency procedures. Usher roles will be decided as a team at the beginning of the volunteer shift.

Do I do this alone or with other people?
Each show will have a 41N volunteer coordinator, front-of-house lead and 6-8 volunteer ushers, so you will never be alone! You are always welcome to put together a group — friends, family or people from an organization — and enjoy the shared experience of bringing a production to life.

What do I wear and bring?
Wear clothes and shoes that you’re comfortable in! Please make sure they are free from stains and tears. 41N volunteers will receive 41N T-shirts. You are welcome to bring a water bottle, and we encourage you to leave valuables at home.

How do I prepare for the event?
No experience is needed. All the training you need will take place the day of the show, before guests arrive. Ensure you arrive at or before the shift's start time, and check in with the volunteer coordinator in the Rozsa Lobby for a brief orientation.

The 41 North Film Festival spans four days and showcases award-winning independent films and filmmakers from around the region, country and world. Its mission is to provide Michigan Tech students and the surrounding community with an opportunity to critically engage films that are currently in distribution and under discussion, as well as the chance to interact with filmmakers, producers and other industry professionals about the art and business of cinematic storytelling.

Visit the volunteer registration page on GivePulse and search for 41N to sign up for individual volunteer shifts. Questions can be directed to our volunteer coordinator, Allison Neely, at alneely@mtu.edu or by phone at 906-487-2816.
