Michigan Tech Researcher Finds Fruit Fly Believed to Be Extinct

Thomas Werner in the woods prepping a vial.

Armed with a banana-baited live trap and a strong desire to disprove a gap in a species distribution map, Thomas Werner (BioSci) found a single specimen of the species Drosophila narragansett on the Maasto Hiihto public recreation trail in Hancock.

Researchers suspected that the silver-faced fruit fly was extinct. “Astonishingly, it seems not to have been collected within the past 60 years despite its broad range,” said Werner.

The investigation that led to the elusive fruit fly was entirely unplanned. It started with an irresistible research paper in the hands of Werner, an educator who has been raising awareness about the scope and importance of fruit flies throughout his career.

Football Thwarts Wildcats to Win 14th-Straight Miner's Cup

The Michigan Tech football team won its 14th-consecutive Miner's Cup with a 39-9 victory over Northern Michigan during Hall of Fame weekend at Kearly Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 26.

The Huskies made a 17-point second quarter eruption and scored 19 points in the second half. With the win, they move past a two-game losing skid.

"It's awesome for the guys in our current locker room to win the Miner's Cup coming off of two tough weeks. To put the preparation in that they did, and the focus in terms of everything we were trying to get back on track with, was awesome all week," Tech head coach Dan Mettlach said. "We came out and were maybe too amped up — the execution part, especially offensively, lacked in the first quarter, which was a bit frustrating — but it was a great win for our team and unbelievable for our program to win 14 in a row."

Cross Country Men Take Third, Women Claim Fifth at GLIAC Championships

The Michigan Tech cross country squads raced at the GLIAC Cross Country Championships, held at the Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Michigan, on Saturday, Oct. 26. Tech's No. 20 nationally ranked men placed third and the women took fifth at the event.

The Huskies saw six All-GLIAC performances, with Sam Lange, Michael Dennis, Tucker Ringhand and Colman Lenci earning the honor for the men, and Sophia Rhein and Cedar Gordon for the women.

"I was pleased overall with our level of effort and competitiveness today. We've been talking about making sure we maximize those things in the most important races, and I saw us chasing that throughout the races today," Tech head coach Robert Young said. "In some cases we had athletes give great efforts but just not have their best level of performance, but we also had some nice breakthroughs."

Soccer Shuts Out Pride, Lakers

The Michigan Tech soccer team completed its first GLIAC weekend sweep at home, shutting out both Purdue Northwest on Friday, Oct. 25, and Roosevelt on Sunday, Oct. 27, on Senior Day.

Senior midfielder Jordan Noble scored her first career goal while goalkeeper Bri Barrows recorded a career-high in saves to help the Huskies to a 1-0 win over Purdue Northwest at Kearly Stadium on Friday.

"It was a well-fought battle and we got onto the board kind of early and just rode out some of the waves," Tech head coach Melissa Kuhar said. "We knew it would be a game of transitions, and statistically they had a lot of shots towards the end of the game. Overall, I think we had a lot of good chances, and to be able to score a goal and win is great. With Senior Day coming up, it's awesome to have a senior score, and it was awesome for Jordan to get her first career goal at Tech."

Sunday, the Huskies earned a 2-0 victory over Roosevelt on Senior Day at Kearly Stadium.

"It was a good game, although it could've gone a bit better in some areas," Kuhar said. "Overall, it was a really good game and a nice day to honor our seniors that have given a lot to this program. We did a good job of riding the momentum and we just have to keep it going."

Hockey Swept by Clarkson

The Michigan Tech hockey team was swept by Clarkson, recording its first two losses of the season in nonconference action at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25-26.

The Huskies fell 4-1 to the Golden Knights on Friday. Tech tied the game 1-1 in the second period, but the Golden Knights scored three unanswered goals.

"I thought we played much better than the last game we played," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "Their consistent upper-end players played well and capitalized on their chances. We have a pretty young team so we need to stay positive and continue to look at areas to grow."

Tech fell 2-1 in overtime on Saturday. The Golden Knights scored on the power play with 17.1 seconds left in the extra session to earn the victory.

"I thought we played well," Shawhan said. "We did some line juggling and established a little bit of an identity."

"A lot of young guys are still learning how to manage the game, and we didn't execute on the power play," he said.

Volleyball Falls at Wayne State, GVSU

The Michigan Tech volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on the road over the weekend, losing at Wayne State on Friday, Oct. 25, and at Grand Valley State on Saturday, Oct. 26.

The Huskies fell 3-0 to the Warriors on Friday, losing 25-17, 25-18 and 25-22 in the teams' only meeting of the regular season.

"That performance was a major disappointment, plain and simple," Tech coach Matt Jennings said. "I feel like Meg (Raabe) and Kaycee (Meiners) were ready to play, but the rest of us were not. We'll have to be better tomorrow."

The Huskies fell 3-1 at No. 13 Grand Valley State on Saturday. Tech took the third set against the Lakers, but fell 26-24, 25-18, 12-25 and 25-21.

"Today was way better than last night, but that's not our standard," Jennings said. "We were in a position to win sets one and two, but didn't finish. Grand Valley is an excellent team, they have all the pieces and haven't lost but to undefeated Ferris. There were moments we were outplaying them and in control, but Grand Valley simply knows how to finish. We contained a pretty good offense for stretches and served very well. Paige (Wagner) was great for us in this one."
