First-Year International Students

How to Apply

  1. Complete your application for admission through the Common Application. All international undergraduate students who are not part of an exchange program must apply as “first year” students on the Common App.
  2. Pay the one-time, nonrefundable $35 USD Common Application processing fee. This fee is required for all undergraduate international applicants. Please do not request a Common App fee waiver. We do not provide or approve fee waivers for international applicants. Applications with fee waiver requests will not be processed.

Please do not send letters of recommendation, photographs, portfolios, personal essays, or additional documents unless or until they are specifically requested on your Husky Portal checklist (see below). Doing so may delay your decision. Any additional required documents will be posted to your checklist within a few days after you submit your application.

After Acceptance

F-1 Visa Requirements

To receive an I-20, you must show proof of funds for one year of studies. After you are accepted to Michigan Tech, access to documents will be available in your Application Portal.

Students must submit the following required documents. Some documents can be uploaded directly to your Applicant Portal, and some (such as bank statements) cannot. Any documents that cannot be uploaded should be emailed to international@mtu.edu.

  • A completed Affidavit of Financial Support (F-1). It must be dated no more than 12 months before the semester start date.
  • Supporting proof of funds documents showing sufficient funds for at least one full year of studies, dated no more than 12 months before the semester start date. Acceptable proofs include bank statements, scholarship letters, and loan letters.
  • A copy of your passport photo page.

Dependent Visa Holders

If you are currently in the US on a dependent visa status, such as H-4, L-2, or J-2, and you plan to keep** that status as you begin your studies at Michigan Tech, you do not need to submit financial documents, but should still submit the following through your Application Portal:

  • A copy of your passport photo page.

** You can only study on your dependent visa until you turn 21 or your parent's visa status changes—whichever comes first. With plenty of time in advance of losing your status and your ability to study, you should review the process for changing your status to F-1. When you are ready to change your status to F-1, you should work with the Michigan Tech International Programs and Services Office to do so.
