Apply using either our first-year application or with the Common App—select the option that is right for you, but only submit one application. Then, request to have your official high school and/or college transcripts sent to us. Official SAT or ACT scores are not required, but are recommended, for merit based scholarship consideration. Plus, there’s no need for letters of recommendation or essays (for most majors).
Admission requirements vary by major. The admissions committee will review your transcript to see the courses you took and grades you received. If you'd like to talk about your specific academic credentials related to admission, contact the admissions staff.
Additional Application Materials
Additional application materials may be required if you are applying for admission into the following degree programs:
- audio production and technology
- sound design
- theatre and entertainment technology
GPA
We’ll review your high school transcript and evaluate the courses you took and the grades you received. The cumulative GPA provided by your high school is used in the admissions process. If you have a weighted and unweighted GPA, we will use whichever is best for you in terms of admission and merit-based scholarships. We do not recalculate your GPA; however, we will convert your GPA to a 4.0 scale if your school uses a different grading scale.
Test Scores
First-year applicants applying for admission during 2025 semesters are not required to submit test scores. Homeschool students and students with a GPA below a 3.0 may be required to submit official SAT or ACT scores or other documentation. If you’ve taken both exams, or taken an exam more than once, we use whichever scores from a single test benefit you most for admission and merit-based scholarships. Michigan Tech does not superscore.
Official SAT or ACT scores are not required, but are recommended, for merit based scholarship consideration. If you have taken, or have the opportunity to take the SAT or ACT, we strongly encourage you to provide official scores as they can be used for merit scholarship consideration, as well as future course placement.
Michigan Tech accepts either the SAT or ACT and has no preference to which scores students submit—students receive equal consideration for admission and merit-based scholarships with either set of scores.
If you're preparing for the SAT, just 15 minutes a day using free online tools through Khan Academy can significantly increase your total score. This means better chances for admission and scholarships (at all schools—not just Michigan Tech).
Recommended High School Courses
We recommend the following college-prep curriculum. Keep in mind these are recommendations, not requirements for admission.
International Students
Michigan Tech welcomes international students from more than 50 countries. Learn more about admissions requirements as an international student.
Homeschoolers
Homeschool students are encouraged to apply for admission to Michigan Tech. You’ll need to submit an application for admission and an official transcript showing courses taken and grades received. Homeschool students may be required to submit SAT or ACT scores or other documentation; scores must be sent directly to Michigan Tech—our SAT code is 1464; our ACT code is 2030.
High School Graduation
To enroll at Michigan Tech, you must be awarded a high school diploma or have earned your GED (or equivalent). An official final transcript, showing your final grades and graduation date, is required within 30 days of your high school graduation. Upon completion of your senior year, request to have an official final transcript sent directly to Michigan Tech from your high school. To be considered official, a transcript must be sent directly to Michigan Tech by the institution issuing the transcript, or from a transcript service such as Parchment. Transcripts stamped “issued to student” or those hand delivered, even if in a sealed envelope, are not acceptable.
Your final transcript will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee to verify continued academic success during the period after that covered by the transcript used at the time of your acceptance to Michigan Tech. If you experienced a departure from your previous academic performance, you will be contacted and asked to provide a detailed explanation. A significant decline in academic performance during your senior year may affect your enrollment status and, at the University’s discretion, result in a revocation of your admission and any financial assistance awarded.
Students who earn a certificate of attendance, even if admitted to Michigan Tech prior to receipt of the final transcript, will not be allowed to enroll at Michigan Tech as a degree-seeking student.
High School Equivalency Exam Holders
Students who have earned high school equivalency through the GED or HiSET may submit test results in lieu of a high school transcript. Request your transcript through the appropriate testing agency: GEDor HiSET
