At Michigan Tech, every application for admission is reviewed on an individual basis. In some cases, the admissions committee will request more information before making a decision.
If you receive an email, letter, or phone call from the Admissions Office asking you to submit additional information, or if your Application Portal shows a new checklist item, this means we’re missing a required document to help us better understand your academic potential. To receive full consideration for admission, it is in your best interest to provide the additional documentation.
Learn more about the item(s) you are being asked to provide and why we are asking. Note: Not all items listed below are required for every student.
Why we ask: You submitted materials such as a transcript or test scores but we have not received a completed application for admission.
Why we want this: An application for admission is required for all students interested in studying at Michigan Tech. You will select the academic program you wish to pursue at time of application.
What to do: Complete our online application—it should take you no more than 15 minutes to complete. If you started an application, return to the system, review the information, and use the “Yes, I agree. Submit my Application” button.
Why we ask: While SAT or ACT test scores are not required for first-year degree seeking students applying in 2023, if the admissions committee feel that seeing test scores could support your application, we will request that you send official scores. For homeschool students, we may ask for official scores as an independent, third-party assessment of your academic abilities.
Why we want this: Your test scores will allow us to further evaluate your potential for success in college. Michigan Tech currently accepts either the SAT or ACT and has no preference to which scores students submit with the application for admission—students receive equal consideration for admission and merit-based scholarships with either set of scores. Sending your scores each time you take the SAT or ACT can benefit you by allowing us to consider you for all available enrollment- and scholarship-related opportunities.
What to do: Request that your scores be sent directly to Michigan Tech either from your high school on your official transcript or have your counselor complete the High School Counselor Information Page. Alternately, contact the testing agency to request that your scores be sent to Michigan Tech—our SAT code is 1464; our ACT code is 2030.
Why we ask: An official high school transcript is required for all first-year degree seeking students and transfer students who have not earned an associate’s degree or higher at the time of application. First-year students must submit an official high school transcript showing grades through the junior year. Transfer students must submit an official college transcript from every school attended following high school graduation, even if you withdrew from courses. Note, if you are a transfer student who has not earned an associate’s degree or higher at the time you applied to Michigan Tech, you will also need to submit an official high school transcript showing your graduation date.
Why we want this: Reviewing your transcripts will allow us to evaluate your past performance in your coursework.
What to do: Request that an official copy of your transcript be sent directly to Michigan Tech from your school(s). High school transcripts can be faxed to 906-487-2125, sent through a document service such as Parchment, or mailed to the address below. College transcripts must be sent through the mail or electronically from the sending college.
Admissions Office
Michigan Technological University
1400 Townsend Drive
Houghton, MI 49931
Why we ask: You indicated you obtained a high school equivalency certificate.
Why we want this: Reviewing your exam results will allow us to evaluate your potential for success at Michigan Tech.
What to do: Contact the appropriate testing agency and request to have an official copy of your exam results sent directly to us: GED, HiSET, TASC.
Why we ask: Admission to the audio production and technology or sound design programs are highly competitive (typically only 10 students are admitted per major, per year). The application process for these majors requires students with a cumulative GPA below a 3.25 (on a 4.00 scale) to submit examples of creative work to demonstrate interests and abilities.
Why we want this: Your examples of creative work will allow the faculty members reviewing your application to better understand your past experiences, excitement, and motivation to learn—which help determine your future success in our programs.
What to do: Review the guidelines for creative work. Then, submit examples of your creative work using the form in your Application Portal, then select the Undergraduate Application to get started. You can share up to five videos, sound files, images, documents, or other media.
Why we ask: On your application for admission, you indicated you planned to retake the ACT or SAT.
Why we want this: The committee has reviewed your application with the scores we have on file and would like to see your new scores (regardless of how you did). We feel you may have the potential to succeed at Michigan Tech—additional test scores will help us better assess your academic abilities.
What to do: Contact the testing agency and have your new scores sent directly to Michigan Tech. If you have already requested that your scores be sent to us, wait for us to receive them (usually 1-2 weeks after you get your student score report). Or, ask your high school counselor to complete the High School Counselor Information Page to submit your most recent scores. You can take the ACT or SAT as late as June of your senior year and still be considered for fall admission.
If you did not, or do not plan to, take the SAT or ACT again, email us at mtu4u@mtu.edu to let us know. We will make a decision with the information we have on file.
Why we ask: We would like to see grades from an additional grading period beyond what was reported on the official transcript we have on file.
Why we want this: After reviewing your transcript(s), the admissions committee feels you may have the potential to succeed at Michigan Tech, however the transcript we have for you shows grades through your junior year of high school or previous college semester (if you’re a transfer student). We would like to see the classes you are currently taking and how you are doing in those classes before making a final decision.
What to do: High school students: Ask your guidance office to send an updated official transcript AFTER your next grading period (semester, trimester, or term). A mid-term grade report or duplicate copy of the transcript we already have on file will not help us make a decision on your application. Transfer students: Request to have an official transcript sent directly to Michigan Tech after grades from your current semester have been posted.
Why we ask: In order to enroll at Michigan Tech as a degree-seeking student, we must have an official final high school transcript showing your graduation date and all courses you completed during high school.
Why we want this: We will review your transcript to verify you completed the requirements to graduate from high school. The final transcript will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee to verify continued academic success during the period after that covered by the transcript used at the time of acceptance to Michigan Tech. A significant decline in academic performance during the senior year may affect enrollment status and, at the University's discretion, result in a revocation of admission and any financial assistance awarded.
What to do: Ask your high school to send an official final transcript with all senior-year classes, grades, and graduation date directly to Michigan Tech as soon as possible after the information is available. A registration hold will be placed on your student account if the transcript is not received by the first day of classes.
Why we ask: The transcript we received from your high school did not include classes and grades for your entire junior year.
Why we want this: Incoming first-year student applicants are required to submit an official high school transcript showing courses and grades through your junior year of high school. We are unable to process your application for admission until this information is received.
What to do: Ask your high school to send an official transcript with all junior-year classes and grades directly to Michigan Tech.
