Dr. James R. Buck, a 1952 civil engineering graduate of Michigan Tech, was Professor and former Chair of the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Iowa. He completed his MSCE (structural) at Michigan Tech in 1953. Upon graduation, he was a construction engineer for the U.S. Naval Corps of Engineers for three years. He also worked for Austin Engineers, Ltd., and Calumet Flexicore Corporation before earning his doctorate in industrial engineering from the University of Michigan in 1964.
Dr. Buck taught at the University of Michigan (1962-65), Purdue University (1965-80), and the University of Iowa (1981-present) and was a visiting professor at North Carolina State University and Texas Technological University. Dr. Buck's research focused on ergonomics in product and process design and on engineering economics. He published over 100 books, book chapters, and papers. He received numerous awards including three Eugene Grant Awards from the American Society of Engineering Education. He was a fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineers and a certified professional ergonomist.
