Why did you choose Michigan Tech?
Location Location Location
Tell us about a memorable experience you had with a class or about a favorite professor?
I submitted a poem to Dr. Andrew Storer for an assignment asking for my definition of forest health. I did not receive my poem back with the rest of the class, I did not receive a grade, nor was my assignment marked incomplete. The poem disappeared and was never discussed again.
Now, how about a memorable experience outside of class?
My girlfriend (now wife) and I were confronted by the police on a dark and stormy golf course at around midnight. We were collecting earth worms that we were planning to use the following day in a challenge for students. The officer was not as surprised as we thought he would be.
How well did Michigan Tech prepare you for your career?
I might have been well prepared, but getting hired for a full-time position in my field is nearly impossible.
What was your first job after graduation and how has your career progressed?
Soothsayer, and now I try to read tea leaves.
Why did you choose to become a member of the Board of Directors?
I thought it would be a great opportunity to help align current student projects with alumni support.
Tell us about a few of your career highlights and notable achievements?
I was the youngest recorded person to solo kayak down the 2,350 miles of the Mississippi River.
What advice on being successful would you give to Tech students and young alumni?
Walk everywhere that you can.
Would you share your philosophy of life?
I think appreciation is the central goal. Gratitude for all things, both good and bad, that we are allowed to experience in our lives.
