The Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (AROTC) prepares University students to be US military officers. There are different levels of service requirements—and there’s no service commitment for students who didn’t receive a scholarship.
Students who receive an AROTC scholarship or enter the Army ROTC Advanced Course agree to complete an eight-year period of service with the US Army. The obligation is met in different ways, depending on individual circumstances:
- Scholarship winners serve full time in the Army for four years, with a balance of service in the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR).
- Advanced Course students who are not scholarship winners serve full time in the Army for three years, with the balance in the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR).
- Selected cadets can choose to serve part time in the US Army Reserve or Army National Guard while pursuing a civilian career.
