Engagement and Belonging empowers the Michigan Tech community and partners to thrive by fostering a culture of collaboration, mutual respect, and meaningful connections through consultation, outreach, and sustainable strategic initiatives.
The Engagement and Belonging Council serves as an information exchange among colleges, major administrative units, and the Vice President for Engagement and Belonging to coordinate policies and address issues that impact goals related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and a sense of belonging at Michigan Technological University.
The Advocates and Allies program promotes equity and inclusion on campus by training individuals to actively challenge bias. The program is run by faculty and staff volunteers and raises awareness of systemic inequities and advocates for change. Advocates and Allies was initially funded by two National Science Foundation ADVANCE grants and is now supported by Engagement and Belonging.
The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Sense of Belonging (DEIS) Positive Action Team is composed of Michigan Tech staff, faculty, and administrators charged with implementing a range of fast-start DEIS initiatives. Team members are strategically positioned to bring about positive change across the University and to set the groundwork for progress in the future.
The Center for Diversity and Inclusion, located in the Hamar House, is dedicated to enhancing the academic and co-curricular experience of all Michigan Tech students, with an emphasis on those historically underrepresented and underserved (Native American/Indigenous, African-American/Black, Hispanic/Latino/a/e/x, Asian-American and Pacific Islanders, LGBTQIA+, women, disabled, first generation, low-income, and other intercultural and multicultural identities). The Center is composed of passionate staff and amazing student leaders who engage, educate, empower, and amplify the voices, opportunities, and development of students. Their ultimate goal is to help students create a home away from home where they can thrive and find a sense of belonging.
