The Clinical Practicum
Take the knowledge you've learned on campus and experience how it all comes together during your clinical practicum - a 5-12 month clinical internship - at an affiliated hospital laboratory. Here, you'll work alongside certified laboratory professionals to learn how hospital laboratories operate while performing tests on patient samples, operating laboratory instrumentation, and analyzing quality control.
After the completion of your degree program and clinical practicum, you are eligible to take a national certification exam and become a certified Medical Laboratory Scientist.
Choose Your Route
In the Medical Laboratory Science program at Michigan Tech, students have a choice between two clinical practicum routes - the University-based route and the Hospital-based route. Each route provides an excellent clinical experience for students. Students in the MLS program take a practicum preparation course and work closely with the Program Coordinator to determine which route best fits their needs. Some basic differences between the two are outlined below.
