The Alumni Gateway arch.

From the Dean

The Alumni Gateway Arch, a new landmark on campus, is part of the University’s Alumni Way campus beautification project.

At Michigan Tech, College of Business students study more than business. Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are infused into COB courses and programs. Classes connect disciplines. Degree programs cross borders. Research and class projects draw on expertise from across the University.

Business and Technology Merge to Create the Future

Dean Johnson

In this issue of Impact Magazine, you'll learn about the many ways that STEM is infused into COB courses and programs, such as our new BS in Data Analytics, a financial technology minor, and a master's degree in engineering management. These classes and programs ensure that COB graduates are prepared to fully contribute to today's data- and technology-intensive landscape.

Entrepreneurship is also becoming a hallmark of our business programs. Jacob Soter '19 '20 has created a lifesaving lakeside innovation that warns swimmers about dangerous water conditions, a business idea he developed as a Michigan Tech student. And Eric Roberts '93, a member of our Dean's Advisory Council, offers tips for starting and growing a profitable business, talks about how to get stuff done, and explains how networking and honest feedback fuel success.

In the community, faculty members Laura Connolly and Jenny Apriesnig are engaging their students in a series of economic impact studies; the most recent is an analysis of the potential economic gains and losses related to deepening the harbor at Menominee, Michigan.

This issue also highlights the many accomplishments of our students, including impressive finishes at management and marketing competitions and our first annual College of Business student awards. We also congratulate longtime economics professor William Breffle on his retirement, and we remember the 45-year career of Professor of Economics Paul Nelson.

Technology is fundamentally changing how we communicate and learn, create, consume, and work. Businesses need experts who can successfully leverage today's advanced digital technologies to help their companies stay competitive. The College of Business is preparing our students to become those experts.

Sincerely,

Dean Johnson
