1
There is no cost to the students, teachers, or school for participation.
2
Every high school student who actively participates will receive a one-time $1,000 scholarship* to attend Michigan Technological University in the major of their choice. For tracking purposes, to receive the scholarship, the student must complete an informational form provided prior to the start of the competition.
Please note that students are only eligible to receive this particular scholarship one time, even if they participate in the competition multiple times over the course of their high school career.
3
The Michigan Tech College of Business created the competition as an outreach initiative to inspire and excite high school students and their teachers about the world of finance, investing, economics, and business as a whole.
4
While all active student participants receive a scholarship, only the winning team of students will receive a cash prize at the end of the competition.
5
The winning team is also invited to Michigan Tech’s campus in Houghton, Michigan, to tour campus, meet professors, and discuss their investment philosophies and strategies with student members of our Applied Portfolio Management Program. Past winners have also received MTU merchandise and a pizza party.
6
Please email business@mtu.edu and a staff member will complete the registration on your behalf.
7
Space is limited and we ask that only students with the intent of being actively involved in the competition be registered.
8
The scholarship is available for all students in grades 9 through 12 who participate and attend Michigan Tech to study in an undergraduate major of their choice.
9
Students do not need prior investment experience to participate and all ranges of investing knowledge are welcomed. The program is designed so that all students can actively engage and learn more about investing. Similarly, as their educator, we understand that teachers may come with varying levels of finance knowledge and confidence. We welcome all starting points.
10
The program is flexible so that educators can enhance their curriculum with the tools we provide. As such, there is no minimum or maximum time commitment required to participate. We only ask that educators who enroll their students encourage active participation throughout the competition (i.e. watch and discuss the weekly video as a class, read and discuss the weekly bulletin, etc.). Students are free to devote more or less time to the program outside of class, depending on their level of interest.
11
We welcome friends, family, and community partners to share their expertise and advice with students participating in the Husky Investment Tournament. The students themselves should make the trades, but seeking outside opinion is permitted.
12
The competition is designed to be integrated into business curriculum within a high school classroom setting. Each week, a short video created by a Michigan Tech student or faculty member, outlining an important business/finance concept, is posted for students and teachers to view and discuss. These videos are designed to introduce students to the world of investing and prompt students to think about important investing concepts. During the course of the competition, students are free to manage their portfolio however they deem appropriate. Weekly standings are posted online.
13
The winner will be chosen based on the highest ending portfolio value (i.e. the highest return). Returns are not adjusted on a risk basis. The Michigan Tech College of Business reserves the right to make judgment calls in the selection of the winner, and these are deemed final. This provision is intended to correct any errors in the trading simulation.
14
