How does it work?

  • Complete the employer application.

  • Plan your day. (We can help you think of things to do.)
  • We will match you with a student.
  • Be ready to host in October 2024!

Why job shadow?

Career readiness requires both education and experience. Job shadowing provides opportunities for students to gain experience with local businesses. The experience will benefit students by increasing confidence, learning about a career field, developing professional and networking skills, and making professional contacts. Host companies benefit from increased exposure, potential future employees, and mentoring opportunities.

What does a job shadow do?

A job shadow student will visit your workplace for a full or half day. They are visiting to learn about "a day in the life of _____." Here are some suggested activities for your job shadow:

  • Give a tour of your organization
  • Introduce students to various departments and co-workers
  • Sit in on a meeting
  • Talk about or demonstrate a current project
  • Suggest resources that may help them explore your field
  • Visiting with clients
  • Sharing your own career path
  • Advising students on how to make the most of their time at MTU
  • Offer to review the student's resume
  • Create time for an informational interview
  • Allow the student to listen in on phone or conference call
  • Take student to lunch, possibly with other colleagues
