Mr. Gerald J. McCarthy, a 1948 civil engineering graduate of Michigan Tech, is President and owner of the Transportation Group, Inc., which represents several contractors, consulting engineers, and private businesses. Upon graduation, Jerry joined the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), where he quickly rose through the ranks to become the youngest district engineer in the Department's history.
By 1969, he was in charge of all highway operations as Assistant Deputy Director of the Michigan Department of State Highways. In 1973, until his retirement in 1984, he was MDOT's Deputy Director of Highways, the largest division in the Department with 2800 employees and an annual budget of almost $500 million. He was a member of the Department of Civil Engineering Professional Advisory Committee. He is a member of the National Academy of Science-Transportation Research Board, the Board of Directors of the Michigan Highway Users Conference, the Michigan Air Guard Historical Association, and the American Arbitration Association. He is a registered professional engineer in Michigan.
