As an alternative to CM Design Laboratory (CM4861), chemical engineering students may choose to fulfill the 1-credit requirement through participation in the Enterprise Program or a design project originating in another University department. Students interested in choosing one of these alternative options must first receive department approval by filling out the Design Substitution Form and obtaining the appropriate signatures.
Students choosing this option will be given a project by their Enterprise faculty advisor during their senior year. Suitable projects must contain chemical engineering design components and have multiple realistic constraints comparable to those provided in CM4861. This project is usually relevant to their Enterprise work.
Students choosing this option must meet the following criteria:
- Be "senior-design ready", having completed CM3120, CM3230, CM3410 (may be taken concurrently), and CM3510.
- Participate in a minimum of three semesters of approved Enterprise project work (typically ENT3960, ENT4950, and ENT4960).
- Submit documentation of Enterprise involvement
- Obtain departmental approval of the substitution (CM4861Design Substitution form).
Additional Enterprise project work credits earned above the one credit that substitutes for CM4861 may be used towards technical or free electives or towards an Enterprise minor.
If you are interested in the Enterprise project option, contact an academic advisor before the end of your junior year for more information.
Involvement in an externally sponsored project usually requires two semesters of participation. Suitable projects must contain chemical engineering design components and have multiple realistic constraints comparable to those provided in CM4861. Most students begin participating in the project during fall of their senior year and continue with the project through the following spring semester.
Students choosing this option must meet the following criteria:
- Be "senior-design ready", having completed CM3120, CM3230, CM3410 (may be taken concurrently), and CM3510.
- Enroll in the appropriate class(es) to substitute for CM 4861. This may require special permission from the department offering the class.
- Submit documentation of involvement in the externally sponsored project
- Obtain departmental approval of the substitution (CM4861 Design Substitution form).
Additional credits earned above the one credit that substitutes for CM4861 may be used toward technical or free electives. If you are interested in this option, contact an academic advisor for more information.
