Department of Computer Science High-Impact Research Publication Award

The Department of Computer Science high-impact research publication award provides incentives for publishing scholarly papers in the top conferences and publications. The award recognizes publications accepted by the conferences listed on the CSRankings website or ranked as “A*” or “A” in the Core Portal. Other high-impact journal publications must be approved by the award committee.

For graduate students and faculty, the intention of the high-impact publication award is to increase research productivity, promote publications in top computer science conferences and journals, boost the reputation of Department of Computer Science degree programs, increase the competitiveness of grant proposals, and improve the department's ranking.

Award Guidelines

  • The graduate committee serves as the award committee.
  • The graduate program director will share information about the award with CS faculty and graduate students during the orientation week of each semester.
  • The award committee will review the award procedure each fall semester, consult with faculty members, and make any needed revisions.
  • The award committee, in consultation with the related faculty member(s), reserves the right to deny an award request.
  • Only publications published on or after July 1, 2024 will be considered.

Nominations

  • The student award must be self-nominated by a CS graduate student and their advisor(s).
  • The faculty award must be self-nominated.
  • The nomination can take place immediately after the acceptance notice is received, but no later than two months after the paper is published.

Who Can Receive the Award?

  • A Department of Computer Science (CS) graduate student who is the leading author1 of a full-length, orally-presented2 CORE “A*” or CSRankings paper will receive a $1,000 travel grant and a $400 cash award. Their CS advisor(s) will receive a $300 award to be applied to their IRAD account.
  • A CS graduate student who is the leading author of a full-length, orally-presented, CORE “A” paper will receive a $750 travel grant and a $200 cash award. Their CS advisor(s) will receive a $150 award to be applied to their IRAD account.
  • A CS graduate student who is the leading author of a full-length “high-impact” journal paper will receive a $200 cash award. Their CS advisor(s) will receive a $150 award to be applied to their IRAD account. The CS department can additionally cover the publication fee up to $1000 for the awarded paper. The award committee, in consultation with the related faculty members, will determine if a journal is "high impact."
  • A CS faculty member who co-authors a CORE “A*” or  CSRankings. paper will receive a $200 award to be applied to their IRAD account (not accumulative to the first rule of this section, above).
  • All qualified papers can receive an award.

1In certain areas, the authorships can be alphabetical. In this case, the student and the advisor can make a special petition to justify the award.

2In certain conferences, oral presentation does not significantly increase the competitiveness of an accepted paper. In this case, the student and the advisor can make a special petition to justify the award for a non-orally presented paper.

Award Recognition

  • An awarded student publication will be featured in the College's news blog, student newsletter, and the display window on the third floor of Rekhi Hall.
  • The student awardee is required to present their work in a department seminar; the award will be presented at the beginning of the seminar.
  • The awardee will receive a certificate from the Department of Computer Science.
